September 10. 2016.  Ocean Pathway, Ocean Grove, New Jersey.

The ad said “rain or shine,” but today at the OG Giant Fall Flea Market, there was a bit too much shine. It was hot—nearly 90 degrees, but nevertheless, a large crowd showed up, and there were sea breezes.

The Boardwalk Pavilion was crowded as a group had assembled to enjoy the simple pleasures of the shade along with cool air from the ocean.

I like the ambience of flea and farmers markets, while Eileen is more of a shopper. I, on the other hand, could visit every one of the 385 vendors here today and I would find absolutely nothing that I would want. But the photo ops—that’s another story.

If you are a photographer you can sympathize with me. At noon, with the light changing at every step and with my automatic meter being unreliable, I had to figure out exposures from moment to moment, and it was annoying to manually keep changing the settings.

Noon is the worst time of day to get good photos due to the harsh high-contrast light. I much prefer to shoot in the shade whenever possible. And then there are the flea market throngs, with a giant person stepping in the way just as a Jennifer Lawrence look-alike enters my field of vision.

Some people ask me why I photograph women.   The answer is quite obvious—what is more beautiful?  Even women enjoy looking at pictures of women, especially those unique types whose dress and manner are so graceful, interesting, and enticing.

And especially at the famous flea market on Ocean Pathway in the Grove, by-the-sea, where a photographer cannot deny girls in their summer clothes.

This year the craft show was sold out, with over 300 crafters, the largest number ever, happily showing their wares on Ocean Pathway.  The Camp Meeting Association was fortunate to have picture-perfect weather, and the aisles were wider than for the flea market, making it a more pleasant and less congested  experience for strollers, shoppers, and even for photographers.

For the second year, Alison and Mark Mitchell, two tenters, were organizing the event.  They were buzzing around the venue in their bright green shirts making sure that all was well and that no phony-baloneys were lurking about such as anyone importing Chinese-made stuff.

Alison and Mark were on the scene at 5:30 with the traffic crew, bringing them hot coffee and donuts. Crafters received 30 minutes to unload their displays.  We caught up with the dynamic duo  at 10:00 am, as they flitted around the show looking to plug leaks, fix cracks and calm nerves.

Only  home crafters were admitted to the show and all of those exhibitors had to be vetted by Mark and Alison.  They had to submit photographs of themselves busy in their workshops.  One artist who worked with steel had the burns on his arms to prove his credentials.

Since all of you are familiar with scenes of craft shows on the Pathway, we concentrated on portraits of some of the artists.

An Asbury Park tradition— a monster event  last year,  almost disappeared with the tide this year, however a last minute reprieve by a local businessman saved the day for the annual Zombie Walk in AP.  It is a fun event, but it is always the same–i.e. like ground hog day.  But all the buoys and ghouls like it, so it was held today after some on again/off again confusion.

If you missed it today because you thought there wasn’t a ghost of a chance that it would return, then better luck next October.
