KEN PEPLOWSKI  and FRIENDS (live.)  Ken is on clarinet. “All the Things You Are.”  This song was written by Jerome Kern, melody; with Oscar Hammerstein II,  lyrics. It was for a 1939 Broadway show called Very Warm for May.

The great jazz sax player John Coltrane loved the lyrics of this song so much, he referred to it as the “angel glow” song.    (“You are the angel glow that lights the star'”)

“You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song

“You are the angel glow that lights the star
The dearest things that I know are what you are
Someday my happy arms will hold you
And someday I’ll know that moment divine
When all the things you are, are mine”

Martha’s Vineyard is a beautiful island paradise.  We visited friends there, but we learned never to go when the President of the United States was vacationing.  He brings so many people with him, including staff, security, press and others; it’s as if an invasion had occurred.  It’s even impossible to ride a bike in Edgartown, the quaint capital.

You can make a reservation and take your car on the ferry.  Or, it you are spirited and in good shape, just take your bicycle–or rent one.  And don’t forget that there is a fascinating Camp Meeting ground on the island   (Oak Bluffs), complete with cute cottages and traditions such as Illumination Night.

In the Berkshires, near Tanglewood, classical music is king.  They used to read poetry here in their dining room, and musicians stop by solo or in small groups to play for the guests.  This is a great place to visit, especially during the summer when Tanglewood is open.

Alan Bergman, lyricist:

“That face, that face, that wonderful face;
It shines, it glows all over the place.”
