By Paul Goldfinger, Editor  @Blogfinger

Nagle’s in Ocean Grove used to be a pharmacy, but you can no longer buy drugs there despite the many pill  and elixir bottles found in the antique cabinets around the place.  It was built in 1880, and Len Steen of Ocean Grove turned it into a restaurant that is very old- fashioned, including an ice cream/soda fountain.  People line up at the window for cones and sundaes  (remember those windows  in candy stores found in urban environments like Brooklyn and Newark? ).

The interior of Nagle’s is what sets it apart from other establishments in the Grove. Great effort went into the decor, but there are some items, like the racing jersey seen above, that suggest the owner’s interest in horse racing.

But don’t try to lay down a wager at Pimlico inside.   Instead, the best bets are the food and the ice cream which you can enjoy inside or out, weather permitting.

“Hi Paul…shot this this morning before the sun came up….The beach replenishment crew has moved well into Bradley Beach and is slowly pulling out of the south end of Ocean Grove….so we can say good bye to the heavy equipment and ships off shore, it would seem….”

MARTHA WAINRIGHT   From the soundtrack of the movie The Aviator.   The song “I’ll be Seeing You” was written by Fain and Kahil in 1938.  It was in a Broadway show called “Right this Way” which closed after 15 performances, but it was huge during WWII when it became an anthem for homesick British and American troops.

Such the facts m'am. Crime scene photo by Ken Buckely on Broadway

Just the facts m’am. Crime scene photo by Ken Buckley on Broadway

While sending us a terrific news image, Ken has actually found beauty in the evidence. Ken says an illegally parked car forced the plow to go around.  Will we hear about this in the Neighborhood Watch Report?  Ken’s documentary weapon of choice: an iPad 2.    It seems awkward to take a photo with an iPad.  But we can’t ignore this fine result.  Thanks, Ken.  We are having a field day today with guest photographers. —-Paul @Blogfinger

This is the 11th annual New Year’s Day fundraising event where over 500 people jump into the Atlantic Ocean near Convention Hall to raise money for over 15 local charities.  the event is sponsored by the Sons of Ireland who had bagpipers there to lead the plungers to the water.

Bob Bowné is an award winning photographer from Ocean Grove whose amazing shot of Sandy blasting the fishing pier was posted on Blogfinger and has been on display at the Museum of the City of New York’s exhibit about Sandy.

Rich Amole is an avid history researcher. He lives in Philadelphia, but spends a great deal of time in Ocean Grove.  We have previously reported on his work digging into the past of the Shawmont Hotel on Ocean Avenue. (link:  BF Shawmont article )

Now he has discovered an old picture book of OG and AP containing a winter photo looking back from the fishing pier.  In the middle is the Ocean Avenue House which later evolved into the Shawmont.

This is what Rich had to say about the image seen above,

“I found the winter time beach scene and it is dated 1908.  This book appears to have come from the Library of Congress digitized files.   What is great about it is that in the center of the Ocean Grove Avenue properties is the Ocean Avenue House that many decades away will be the Shawmont.  This is the oldest “photo” I have of that lot.”

As for his ongoing Shawmont project, he said,

“I continue to seek old image’s for my Ocean Grove/Shawmont Hotel project, and that research has led me to this wintertime photograph from so long ago.

I’m really looking now for Ocean Avenue House/Hotel images in any form as they occupied the property now where the Shawmont Hotel is at 17 Ocean.

Pretty cool to see the winter time pic from the Pier. Ever run across this one?”

EDITOR’S NOTE: We welcome comments from you OG historians out there who might have some observations about that OG skyline scene or about Rich’s quest for Shawmont info.  We have never seen this particular photograph before.

Morning Glory at Karen's garden on Mt. Hermon at Delaware. Note the mums to the left. Blogfinger photo.

10/8/13.   Morning glory at Karen’s garden on Mt. Hermon at Delaware. Note the mums to the left. Blogfinger photo taken around 1:00 pm. The morning glory flowers tend to fade toward the end of the day.

By Eileen Goldfinger, house and garden editor  @Blogfinger  (with accompaniment by Paul on the keyboard.)

The big thing for fall flora in the Grove are chrysanthemums.  You expect morning glories in the spring, but there are some species that like cold weather. In the above case of fall flora in the Grove, the gardener may have planted these seeds in the summer. This plant is in a pot.  Morning glories can be invasive.

The hydrangeas around town turned a lovely reddish color late in the summer, but many of those blooms are now becoming dry and brown  and should be pruned and discarded.  If you have some nice hydrangea flowers now (as above,)  you can prune them and bring them into the house for a dry fall arrangement.  Just stick them in a vase—no water needed.

We did notice some white daisies around the Grove.  Our garden still has multicolored lantana, zinnias, begonias and New Guinea impatiens. The liriope has bluish lavender flowers that turn into a dark blue berry. The recent warm weather has given the begonias and impatiens some extra life.

The Aanensen’s had an awesome fall display at their home, the Tali Essen Morgan House on Abbott Avenue.  In one fell swoop, Paul was able to take a photo that included mums, lantana, coleus, and begonias.

Editor’s Note:    We have never had a fell swoop before on Blogfinger—in fact, we don’t even know what it is. Maybe we can join the zombies in the Guinness Book of Dopey Records. –Paul

“IT’S YOU”   (by the cast of “Dames at Sea”) is dedicated to all those gardeners in Ocean Grove who create wonderful gardens–secret and public and too shady and sun speckled–around town designed to delight all the walkers who enjoy the Grove (aptly named)  with all its surprises including the flora and fauna (including the girls in their summer dresses and short shorts that defy gravity)  —-PG
