Piazza della Signoria by Eric Lindbloom. This image introduces the book of this collection from Florence, Italy 1994.

In 1994, American photographer Eric Lindbloom published his book, Angels at the Arno, containing images in Florence from 1979-1987.
The preface says, “This is a city not so much of paintings and trattorie as of mysterious, hidden sculptures, emerging from the ancient architecture like stone made flesh. As Linda Pastan writes in her preface, Lindbloom’s Florence is “transformed from a city of blaring car horns and leather vendors, impressive piazzas and forbidding facades to a quiet place of small streets and courtyards, of homespun angels whose wings throw light and shadow over everything, even at high noon.”
I saw this collection in 1994 when an exhibit at the Howard Greenberg Gallery in SoHo featured this body of work. As a photographer I was impressed by the soft richness of his images, especially since they all were obtained with a Diana camera, a plastic toy.
Cameras such as this have imperfections due to light leaks and a plastic lens, but in the right hands, they can create remarkable photographs. There is a cult following for this genre.
I purchased a signed copy of this book at the exhibit as well as one of his prints, all of which were beautifully crafted in the dark room.
Lindbloom, born in 1934, has continued to exhibit his black and white landscapes, with his most recent gallery show this past summer at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He is one of the founders of the Center for Photography in Woodstock, NY.
Paul Goldfinger photo. April 15, 2023. 500 feet long. Pier opened to the public. Click once to enlarge. Blogfinger.net. The old pier was more fun and safer.

The new pier (open to the public 4/15/23) tolerated a large crowd of “first-timers” which tested the pilings out to 500 feet. But ironically the pier subsequently had to be shut down in December 2023 due to pilings failures.
Later it was reopened in 2024 , but no one was permitted to go past the new barricade. We understand that there is a law suit in process as to who is responsible for the malfunction.

Here is the latest CMA announcement of October 09, 2025:
The OG Camp Meeting Association posts a “statement” that is printed in the Coaster:
The CMA announced, “After many months of detailed investigation and analysis, we are in receipt of our engineer’s report on the structural sufficiency of the pier addition. Regrettably, we have been advised by our engineers that the pier extension may not be structurally sound enough to be used safely.
“Accordingly, the end of the pier will continue to be closed for the foreseeable future while we pursue remedial options. Thank you for your patience.”

Those of you who follow this blog know that one of our themes is photography. We are interested in all sorts of photo works including news, Ocean Grove and fine arts. The bottom line is that we have high standards in terms of quality, but don’t worry about whether your pictures are good enough; if you like them, just email them to us and we will try to use them.
We like to show images of the Grove, especially those that capture the lifestyle of our unique town. Photography helps us dispel the stereotypes that, for example, would call us “Ocean Grave.” We encourage citizens to send us news photos or just pictures around town that illustrate something special. We tend not to use pictures of places that have been photographed thousands of times before, like the fishing pier or the Great Auditorium, but if you have an unusual take on those subjects, then try us.
One photographer said that she hadn’t send us pictures because she thought that we only posted scenics. The fact is that will consider any subject matter from any place.
One Grover, Erik Landsberg, who works at MOMA, was able to arrange for us to post an image by the great American artist Walker Evans which Evans had shot on Ocean Pathway; I think it was in the 1930’s. That was special. Sometimes we like to discuss the great masters and post their photographs along with those of amateurs.
If you have an image that is a print, lend it to us so that we can scan it for digital use. We also are interested in the unique opportunities offered by digital cameras, especially cell phones like the iPhone, which takes wonderful pictures, and you can experiment with photo apps.
