Every summer, the day after Labor Day, the town of Ocean Grove, as we have known it all summer long,  suddenly disappears, and another version takes its place. It’s magic like the story of Brigadoon.

For those who are aware of demographic and lifestyle changes in the Grove, there is no doubt about an influx of young people:  couples and singles and kids…..and their dogs.

If you look at the 2020 census, the median age of OG is 61.  Contrast this with Asbury Park= 37 and Bradley Beach =42

But I predict that the median age here is now dropping, and that is a good thing for the town.

Maybe a new generation would do a better job in shepherding the Grove to a new direction as a cultured  historic residential community.

Mt. Tabor, Israel. near the Sea of Galilee.  It is the site of a biblical battle between the Israelites and the army of the Canaanites.

By Paul Goldfinger,  Editor Blogfinger.net.

The founders of Ocean Grove named some streets at the North End after actual elevated geographic sites in Israel.  They were admirers of the Israelites and the Holy Land and they had a model of Jerusalem  (1881)  where the Auditorium Pavilion is now.  Some called Ocean Grove “Jerusalem-By-the Sea.”    The holiness movement strived to declare OG a holy city.

All those North End streets say “Way” as part of their street names;  for example, Mt. Hermon Way, and some refer to that part of Ocean Grove as “the mountains of OG.”

Mount Hermon is a mountain cluster found  between Syria and Lebanon, but its southern aspect is found in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in the north.  Its highest point is 9,232 feet.

Mt. Tabor is the site of a major battle in ancient times where 10,000 Judeans  (Jews)  were killed fighting their enemy.

Mt. Zion is a hill near Jerusalem.

Mt. Carmel is a mountain range near Jerusalem.

Fall cottages on Stockton Avenue in Ocean Grove.  Near Allegria.  People love the OG cottages. Blogfinger photo 11/7/17 .

By Paul Goldfinger, Editor @Blogfinger.net

JOHN DONNE:   “No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face.”

There is something special about the Stockton Avenue neighborhood where these two identical cottages  live.  It doesn’t seem Victorian. The architecture is variable, and the houses are mostly small in scale. They look like homes where families live and where pies are baked.

It has a quality of peacefulness and quaintness, as if it were posing for a book on small town America.

One might  assume that the people who live nearby can’t bear the sight of that brick senior facility, but I think they must look there and see a park.  And they also see elderly people who love living there. It is their home in this neighborhood.

Around Stockton Avenue there is a community,  and it seems to be about kindness and comfort.   It looks like all those who live there might share those sentiments.

A nice pair…

Guest photographer Jeffrey Scott calls this image “Two Pears.” I found the photo in Black & White magazine, current edition. December 2025. He is from Greenwood Village, Colorado.

By Paul Goldfinger, Editor, Blogfinger.net. Ocean Grove,  NJ. USA.

Jeffrey Scott currently lives on Long Island.  Like me, he does both color and black and white.  This image appeals to me because of the soft lighting. It is a simple still life with no pretensions. The feel of the image is sensual.  The shades of gray complement the mood where the modest highlights on the pears agree with the rest of the gentle  composition which reveals a handmade quality  to the bowl with the background painted  leaves and  olives.

It looks like an image that I might try to make.  (See my soft landscape below  of Fletcher Lake)
