We visited the grave of President John Tyler  (1790-1862).  He was a Whig and was elected Vice President in 1840 with William Henry Harrison, President.  But Harrison died after spending only one month in office, and Tyler was the first President to succeed to the office from the VP spot.  Tyler had the dubious  distinction of making everybody, including his own party,  mad at him, particularly over his support for the southern states.

His best achievement was to annex Texas.  He was a Virginian and a life long politician whose last office was as a member of the CSA House of Representatives.  He was married twice and had 15 children, so it seems he took some time off from the oval office.

Tyler is buried  in Richmond, Virginia, at the glorious cemetery known as Hollywood  (for the Holly trees).  It is a marvelous place to visit, and Tyler is found in the Presidents Circle, a fine spot way up overlooking the James River.  He is buried with his second wife and his daughter Julia who passed at the age of 20.  A small Confederate flag is stuck into the ground at his site.

His nearby neighbor is President James Monroe whose monument is undergoing some renovation.

The Hollywood Cemetery contains a special section for 28 Confederate generals, and another area for several thousand enlisted men  many of whom died at Gettysburg.  You can imagine the task of bringing those bodies back to Richmond. Jefferson Davis is also there in a place of honor.

The property is huge and quite gorgeous now with cherry blossoms all around. Students from Virginia Commonwealth University are nearby for jogging, hiking, and socializing .

Ocean Township contains a number of communities including  Wanamassa, West Deal, and West Allenhurst. West Allenhurst is across the water from Allenhurst and Interlaken.   (See the map below.)  The water is an extension of Deal Lake.  The geography is difficult to get straight:

These areas have wonderful old homes that take you back to around 1920-1930—very elegant and full of character—especially those on the water.

You could almost imagine F. Scott Fitzgerald walking those streets or wearing a straw hat and bow tie while paddling a row boat with a flapper on board.  In “The Great Gatsby,” Fitzgerald said, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

Here is a Blogfinger link to an old house in Interlaken:

If you scroll down to the article about bagels  (Sept 3), there is a song by a country group.  The song is called  “Hey Good Lookin'” by the Parrothead All-Stars performed by Clint Black and friends.

In that song is a reference to a book.  Tell us what that book is called and what it is used for. Please be specific.

The first one who gets both parts right wins a prize at Seasons General Store at 69 Main Avenue in Ocean Grove.

Norm Buckman of Ocean Grove sent us this “hidden gem.”

He said, “Good morning Dr. I’m certain that everyone enjoys the beautiful photographs of the front of OG tents, but did you know that one has a wonderful rear view hidden from most as well?  It is the creative work of Jane Cherubini at 10 Kingsley Place.

“I thought it might make a great contest photo on Blogfinger.

“Warmest regards Norm Buckman.”

Editor’s note: After we posted this photo, Norm Buckman emailed us and said, ” Thank you. Janie is thrilled to see it. The tent is her joy still after 26 years.”

OGrover was the first to figure this out.  He wins  our “What’s going on here?” contest.  He can pick up his prize by going to Seasons General Store at 69 Main Avenue.  Ask for Michelle or Marc.  —PG

This small Monmouth County town is about the same size and age as Ocean Grove and has an even smaller population. In the 19th century, absolutely nothing happened here, but they have  some old houses, some artists studios, a river, and a small restaurant (Woody’s on Main Street) that serves ground beef with onions, tomatoes and mozzarella on a hard roll for $8.00.  It’s quite tasty, but I could only finish half.  Their coffee is pretty good.  (rated 3 Blogfingers).

They have no Wi-Fi.  The waitress said, “Fear not. You can pick up a weak signal from the library.”  Well, there was no signal.  But they do have hot and cold running waitresses who couldn’t do enough from me.

I stopped there on the way back from a pleasure trip—dropped Eileen off at the Amtrak station in Trenton.  Now Trenton’s a town we should all visit.  Let’s hire some buses.

Oh, one more thing;  if you go to Allentown, there may be a language problem—the townsfolk  speak only Hawaiian.

Delicious Orchards.    November 20, 2013. By Paul Goldfinger ©  Click left

HINT for the “name that town” contest: This New Jersey town’s name was inspired by a body part.  And, like the girl in the song, the town  is in the north country.

Editor’s note:  Mindy Shapiro wins the contest.  This scene is at Delicious Orchards on Rt. 34 south in Colts Neck.  In addition to their amazing market, it is a working farm.  Late this afternoon, as the sun sent glowing light through these trees, with the rays colliding with the red autumn leaves and casting long shadows, a lone farmer was turning over rows of earth with a tractor.

Inside they were taking orders for Bell and Evans fresh turkeys at $3.29 per pound. Organic birds were over $5.00 per pound. People line up for their pies, and the bakery had enough whipped cream on display to make 1000 charlotte russes.
