Cut and stacked and there for the taking

Text and photo by Mary Walton

Ocean Grove volunteer firemen turned to on Saturday, sawing and stacking fallen trees at Firemen’s Park, the result of Hurricane Sandy.

Sorted into large and small logs and kindling, a free supply of firewood now awaits, available to all comers. “If they want it, they should help themselves,” said fire department spokesman David Shotwell Jr.

Neptune Township has decreed that all of the tree trunks and limbs lying beside curbs throughout the Township are free for the taking. It’s better for residents to use the wood than for the Township to pay for pickup and disposal.

Shotwell joined some 10 men, including several father-son pairs, who devoted about five hours to cleaning up the debris. “It was a mess,” Shotwell said. “It was taking up parking spaces. We wanted to make it safer and to make it look nice.” He noted that the southeast corner of the well-used park is a school bus stop, and the park also serves as the origination point for bus tours by local organizations.

As they do every year, firemen also ringed the park with Christmas lights.

Stokes fire company arrives at Mt. Tabor Avenue near Delaware Avenue on Saturday, September 8, 2012. Paul Goldfinger photo

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas which can be fatal if inhaled in high enough concentrations. The gas can emanate from faulty furnaces, hot water heaters, and blocked chimneys among other possible causes.

New Jersey statutes require that CO detectors be placed during construction. The detectors can be battery powered or hard wired and they can last between 2-7 years. They are designed to sound an alarm before dangerous levels of CO develop.

In this instance, in the midst of the giant flea market, yard sales, gridlock and intermittent rains, a CO alarm sounded, and the Stokes fire company responded. The problem was a faulty CO detector. The firemen go to such calls with a diagnostic device that can measure CO levels.

CO detectors can be placed near the floor or higher. It is recommended that one be placed outside each bedroom. If you have any questions, you can call the OGFD. — Paul Goldfinger

Shark caught at Ocean Grove’s south end.  Fisherman threw  it back.  Photo submitted by Mr. William Heatley.

We received this email today from Mr. William Heatley of Ocean Grove:

“I took these pictures this afternoon in Ocean Grove around 5:30 pm. You are welcome to use them in your OG blog.

“This does not appear  to be a sand  shark, as it has black tips on its  fins.

“I don’t know the name of the kids or the fisherman… but he threw it back.”

OG Boardwalk, Sunday, April 29. PG photos

Family bikers pedaling from Asbury Park.

Late Sunday afternoon, April 29, it was cool and sunny on the Ocean Grove boardwalk. A gaggle of bikers surrounded walkers and proceeded north. In two days, on May 1, the summer bike rules take effect, and no bike invasions will occur at 4 p.m. again until October. A family in a 4-wheel contraption peddled by. They had rented the device on the AP boards and were heading south, checking out the Grove.

A group of people were gathered in the same area, waiting for a wedding on the beach. Clara Hess and Timothy O’Shea were to be married in a Jewish ceremony. A guest was holding a folded chuppah (wedding canopy). Some programs were available that described the event.

A basket of multicolored yarmulkas (skull caps) got caught in a breeze that sent them flying onto the OG beach (perhaps a first in this town). A woman in a low-cut gown bounced down the stairs and went hunting for the hats.  For the recession, the bride and groom asked that everyone dance to John Botte’s song from Tremé.  (see below) Then they were to head to the Parlor Gallery in AP for a reception.   — Paul Goldfinger
