By Ross Anzaldi, Esq.  Special to Blogfinger.net.

It was a sunny Florida day, when I received a call from an old friend inviting us to join them for dinner on the following evening.  I should have been prepared for the unexpected when he told me that I needed to wear a jacket, something not usually required  in Florida.

We were to dine at Mar-a-Lago., the “Winter White House” of President Donald Trump.

1100 South Ocean Boulevard, Palm Beach, is situated between the Lake Worth Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in Palm Beach.   It was the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post (the Post cereal heiress) and it is now a country club, a National Historic Landmark, and the “Winter White House.”

With anticipation, we drove across the bay into Palm Beach and rode along the Ocean admiring the many grand estates facing the Atlantic.  We suddenly slowed and made a sharp right turn under a stone archway into a narrow driveway.

In front of us was Mar-a-Lago, a grand estate of a Spanish/Moorish architecture.  It was over three stories high with a bell tower and numerous chimneys rising  into the sky.  A croquet court was to our left and a large American flag was in the center of the lawn.

Our car stopped under a stone portico, and valets opened all four doors at once.  As we exited the vehicle we faced a wrought iron doorway bracketed by a stone archway and columns.  We entered a small reception area and were reminded by the receptionist to turn off our phones and that no pictures were permitted.

We were then escorted into a high ceilinged dining room.  About 20 tables were set for diner.  Fresh flowers were on each table.  The windows were surrounded by heavy drapes and were lace covered.  The Spanish and Moorish decor was maintained throughout the dining room.

We then continued into an intimate club bar area.  We sat by the fireplace and enjoyed our cocktails and then returned to our table.

Dinner was buffet style.  This evening it featured seafood.   The serving area was outside under another portico, protected from the elements.  The view was onto the Intracoastal Waterway and bay.  The buffet was arrayed over 30 feet of various serving stations.  Whole lobsters were cracked— the meat removed and plated.  Shrimp, crab legs, oysters, clams, Dover Sole, in addition to filet mignon.

The salads included hearts of palm, anchovies, and various type of dressings.  A wide assortment of cheeses and breads rounded off the fare.   So many choices, so little time.  After making my salad choices, we returned to enjoy the lobster.

The dining room began to fill up; about 50 guests were present, yet we were able to enjoy and hear our conversations.  The service was solicitous, and the dining room opulent.

Desserts were displayed along two walls of the dining area.    So many choices, and restraint was difficult.

An elegant location, an excellent meal, and a once in a lifetime memory.

BØRNS:  “Electric Love”  from their album Dopamine.  The two lines below and the reference to dopamine explain the popularity of this song among cardiologists, especially electrophysiologists.

It makes me want to get out my electric stethoscope.  And there is an app that lets anyone record their electrocardiogram at home.  So, no more faking hot times.

They came into the rest area single file, or close to it, slowing down as they rode around me.  “Hey, you better get out of the way,” said a man sitting at a table nearby. He was promoting the Bible, but instead of saving a soul, he was trying to save me.  I realized then that I should stop daydreaming, so instead I starting shooting photos.

The Gulf Waters Bicycle Riders are a social group from a nearby mobile home community.  “Candominium” corrected one rider referring to the metal construction of their houses which are  not far from Tropicana Park which we wrote about recently.  They didn’t seem tired, because they apparently take their time as they ride about 10 miles to get to their destination—the  Farmers Market.

They saw me taking pictures, so they requested a group shot. They assembled in about 5 seconds. It shows how fast  a group of seniors can move when they are asked to pose for a picture.  One said, “Don’t put us in Playboy.”   Another called out, “We need to show more leg.”

I call this a “Coaster shot.”  That’s when  persons stand in a horizontal row and grin at the camera.

But I did them a favor and then discovered  this was my best shot, achieving a high rate of smiles due to some ribald remarks coming from both sides of the camera.

One of the group, Artie Johnson, stepped forward and asked me to be sure to send them a photo which he would share.  He said he was from Calverton, NY and he handed me a card that identified him as an Ambassador for the USA Pickleball Association.

I didn’t  know about that, but there was a merchant at the market who sold only pickles. I went up to him and made an offer, “Will you sell me half-sours for half price?”

He replied, “I’m not going to fall for that one.”

Sometimes my jokes fall flatter than a fluke in winter at the Belmar Marina.

I mailed Uncle Artie the photo and a link to this site.

Tropicana Park, Ft. Myers, Florida. Paul Goldfinger photograph  2016.  Click to enlarge, and please pick up after your dog.  This crowd is smiling because the San Carlos Blvd. Walgreen’s has just received a shipment of Viagra  (generic of course.)

They also are happy because somehow Irma  (2017). failed to blow this manufactured home community of nearly 500 units to Kingdom Come.  A few roofs were blown off, and some carports fell victim to the winds, but, despite the Gulf nearby, there was no serious flooding.  Power was out for 5 days.

So these seniors are able to return to their life of bingo, hot dog parties, competitive shuffle board (where they actually have a verb “to shuffle”…as in  “We’re going to shuffle this morning,”) golf, fishing, boating, or just hanging around.

Most of the folks in Tropicana are from the Midwest—–Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, etc. It is rare to see Jersey plates.  Some people wear cheese on their heads; others fly green and gold flags  (Green Bay Packers.)

My neighbors  from Kentucky call me “Doc.”   I’m not sure they know my actual name,  although that’s true also in OG where they call me Blogfinger. On the other hand, I like nicknames—–just ask the Groaners.

And they have lots of 3-wheeler bikes and golf carts. There are early bird specials nearby where you can get a lobster dinner for 12 bucks.  And the swimming pools (2 of them) are heated, even in tropical temperatures.

Nearby are quite a few fancy gated communities where it’s more of a country club atmosphere.  And, of course, the east coast  (Hollywood, Ft. Lauderdale, etc.) is another story altogether.  There you can get a great bagel and  hot pastrami sandwich.

But, in the middle of winter, all of south Florida shares the blessing of great weather, and that alone is worth the journey.

We are going down this week. So, if you can stand it, you will see some warm weather on Blogfinger.  If you learn of any news,  please let us know and send pictures.    If they start digging at the North End we would like that scoop.

And don’t try to enter our house.  We have a very strong Grover with a black dog staying there. His name is Stephen Goldfinger.

If you know of an efficiency apt. in the Grove, to rent, Stephen is looking for one. Contact us at blogfinger@verizon.net.

THE BAND (CONCERT VERSION WITH BOBBY CHARLES)  “Down South in New Orleans.”

“Ship’s at anchor, my suitcase packed,
Got a one way ticket, ain’t comin’ back.
Life’s a pleasure, love’s no dream,
Down south in New Orleans.”

I’m afraid you can’t substitute the name Ft. Myers for New Orleans, but you get the idea of heading south for pleasure, even if it’s Hot Dog Day in Tropicana Park rather then the NO version of a hot time.
