Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks won a Grammy for their music on Boardwalk Empire (HBO). They are a marvelous group that brings back music from the 20’s and ’30’s. They play on Monday nights at Sofia’s (Downstairs) at the Hotel Edison at 221 W. 46th Street. They do 3 sets and go from 8:00 pm to 11:pm and they are unbelievably good.

Ballroom dance teams are always there showing off their moves, but the audience can dance along too.

Because their shows are so unique, celebrities often show up. When we were there, Michael Feinstein, his husband and Liza Minnelli came in to enjoy the show. You can order dinner from the restaurant upstairs (Sophia’s) and the cover charge is only $15.00 per person.

In the October issue of Mix magazine, there is an article which should interest music fans, and especially those who enjoy the hit HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.”  The music won a Grammy last year, and now the 2nd volume has been released.  This article, besides featuring a Blogfinger black and white image of Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks orchestra, tells the story of how meticulous attention resulted in an authentic soundtrack of music from the 1920’s.

This is not the first time one of Paul Goldfinger’s photographs has appeared in a publication.  Last year our photo of Ocean Grove taken from the pier, looking back, was featured in Maine Ahead magazine for their story about Scott Rasmussen.  (Maine Ahead photo link ).

Paul’s photographs have been published in the The Daily Record, Internal Medicine News, The New England Journal of Medicine, Hospital Physician, Pfizer Labs Annual Calendar  (six times),  and New Jersey 24-7  book (cover photo.)

Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks are a New York based “jazz repertory and society dance band.”  They won a  Grammy for the soundtrack of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.”

In their 1996  album Cheek to Cheek they have produced a collection of hits from the 1930’s that were made famous in the movies starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire.  Here’s one of them:

“A Fine Romance” was written by Dorothy Fields (lyrics) and Jerome Kern. This song was only one of two for which she wrote the lyrics before the music was composed.  The song is from the 1936  movie Swing Time and is performed here by the Nighthawks.

We often post the Nighthawks music on Blogfinger.net;  people love the nostalgia of that era.
