A sweet talking guy  says, “Can I come over tonight?  I’ll bring some  Days ice cream.”   But the Chiffons sound a note of caution regarding such sugary enticements:

A little girl in a long red t -shirt is standing in front of Nagle’s clutching an ice cream. She seems a little bewildered by all the people, especially in a nighttime setting when she might normally be in bed; and then Mom leans over and scoops her up to safety. Another magic moment in Ocean Grove.

For years we have been searching for a perfect burger and a superior cup of coffee in Ocean Grove.  When the new owners of the Pizza Shoppe took over recently they promised an expanded menu and delivery in the Grove.  Here is our link to our post from one month ago about that restaurant:   Pizza Shoppe link

Among the  promises at the new Pizza Shoppe was a  “1/2 pound burger with fries, at $9.95—-the best ever.”

We have been suspicious of hyperbole dished out by restaurants in the Grove ever since the Barbaric Bean’s new proprietor put out a sign last summer promising “the best coffee in town.” Well he never got a chance to deliver on that promise because he moved away after his building burned down on February 6.

So when Keith, the chef at the Pizza Shoppe, said in his menu “burgers–the best-ever,” we deferred judgment pending a taste test. Today I went over there for a burger, but I was told that they have removed their “best-ever burgers” from the menu because they “take too long to cook”  when they are busy. I was floored, so I left.  But then a waitress ran after me to say that since they were slow, they would make me a “best-ever-burger.”  I ordered it medium rare and sat down outside.

About 10 minutes later it came out exactly as ordered, and it was super-good—certainly the best I have ever had in the Grove and worthy of culinary praise.  The waitress said that they would make the burger for any customer if they are slow or in the off-season; but it is currently off the menu.

This incident gave me a bad taste because it was reminiscent of Amos (sic) and Andy, the now defunct Asbury Park steak joint which refused to server burgers to us (even expensive gourmet ones) on a weekend.  (See our soon-to-be-posted review of the Cross & Orange which replaced Amos and Andy a few months ago on Cookman Avenue. They have a $17.00 gourmet burger—currently unreviewed—–, but you can reliably order it there at any time,  and it is even on the bar menu. )

So, hamburger lovers in the Grove unite!  Go over to the Pizza Shoppe and ask Keith to put his burgers back on the menu so we could reliably decide to go there (or order delivery or take out) for a superior burger.

Incidentally, the Pizza Shoppe also promised a first-rate cup of coffee there, with a setup outside for Joe lovers.   So far, no go on the Joe.  A spokesperson said, “It’s still up in the air”
