At the September 22, 2014 meeting of the Township Committee an Ocean Grover suggested that garbage pickups be reduced from two per week to one. The idea is that the recycling program is so effective that money could be saved by changing the pick up frequency. What do you think?
I must admit that I know next to nothing about the current music scene , but I do try to pay attention because, despite what some of you might think, if you listen carefully you will find some wonderful new music. Some people say that the love song is dead, but that is far from true.
I especially enjoyed some of the special performances at the 2014 Grammys where new singers and musicians joined with some of the greats of the past, such as when Carol King did a duet with Sarah Bareilles. Much of the new work was beautifully written and performed, but I detected a certain stylistic sameness permeating some of it. Yet isn’t it always like that as music goes through evolutionary changes ? —Paul @Blogfinger

Taylor Swift is a huge talent, and I like her work even if it is aimed at the bubble gum crowd. But Taylor is a rapidly maturing entertainer whose writing and performing are already easing their way into adult music.
“And you throw your head back laughing like a little kid
I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny ’cause he never did
I’ve been spending the last eight months
Thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end,
But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again.”
Treme is the story of New Orleans after Katrina. On Dec 1, 2013 it returned for its fourth and final season. We’ll hate to see it end. It has brought the wonder of New Orleans jazz to HBO along with stories of musicians, chefs, fishermen, Mardi Gras, and the struggle to recover from the storm. Episode one, last Sunday, had a lot of music and it was great.
One of the highlights was to hear the Ellis Marsalis quintet. Here is a song, not from the Treme soundtrack, but from Ellis Marsalis’ album “A New Orleans Christmas Carol.'”—Deluxe Edition. The song is called “Christmas Time is Here.” This is a beautiful tune–not often heard.
This is the second time that the HBO nearly-accurate mockup of the Albatross appears in this, the 4th season of B.E. This time we see Nucky Thompson’s nephew Will, sitting on the front steps having a smoke. If you look carefully, you will see that they removed the front shrubs and changed the color of the front steps. They also added awnings, but the original does have striped valences. The first floor porch has long vertical windows, whereas the TV version has French doors. Here is the link to our first article about the Albatross on TV:

Rich Amole is an avid history researcher. He lives in Philadelphia, but spends a great deal of time in Ocean Grove. We have previously reported on his work digging into the past of the Shawmont Hotel on Ocean Avenue. (link: BF Shawmont article )
Now he has discovered an old picture book of OG and AP containing a winter photo looking back from the fishing pier. In the middle is the Ocean Avenue House which later evolved into the Shawmont.

This is what Rich had to say about the image seen above,
“I found the winter time beach scene and it is dated 1908. This book appears to have come from the Library of Congress digitized files. What is great about it is that in the center of the Ocean Grove Avenue properties is the Ocean Avenue House that many decades away will be the Shawmont. This is the oldest “photo” I have of that lot.”
As for his ongoing Shawmont project, he said,
“I continue to seek old image’s for my Ocean Grove/Shawmont Hotel project, and that research has led me to this wintertime photograph from so long ago.
I’m really looking now for Ocean Avenue House/Hotel images in any form as they occupied the property now where the Shawmont Hotel is at 17 Ocean.
Pretty cool to see the winter time pic from the Pier. Ever run across this one?”

EDITOR’S NOTE: We welcome comments from you OG historians out there who might have some observations about that OG skyline scene or about Rich’s quest for Shawmont info. We have never seen this particular photograph before.
