Can someone explain to me why Neptune takes time to post emergency signs “do not park” for the desperately needed street cleaning then does absolutely nothing to the numerous offenders.
I moved my cars at 5 a.m. today on Asbury Ave, which is a disgusting mess. I came home from work at 1 PM at which time the actually “sweeping” was taking place. Same number of cars as usual, maybe 30% of curbside area swept. What a frigging waste of time and money. Police drove by and did nothing. Doesn’t anybody give a crap about this. Shame on my neighbors. This is the trashiest street in the Grove.
Frigging Editor’s Note: Dave—When Eileen and I drove through town this morning we noticed the poor adherence to the “move your car” notices tacked onto some street poles. Like you, we also moved our cars in the hopes of seeing the streets get clean. Some of the offenders were parked right in front of no parking signs.
Eileen wanted to know why the illegal alien parkers did not receive tickets. I postulated that the police had better things to do than futz around with tickets and paperwork for these “frigging” parking offenders.
The signs were poorly done and may account for some of the lack of compliance, but there is a law enforcement deficit in this town where many minor offenses go unenforced. We have seen that with yard sale permits, posting signs on poles, dogs off leashes, parking in yellow striped areas, and other offenses which are actually just theoretical offenses. But, the public is apathetic and very little seems to bother them. Maybe all those unenforced ordinances should be cancelled, and all the citizens can disobey the rules with a clear conscience—just depend on our collective good will and honesty.
You ask, “Doesn’t anybody give a crap about this?” Maybe we will get some comments about that. ——Paul (Editor @Blogfinger)

Why illegally parked cars are not ticketed is an excellent question. Especially since there are dedicated patrol cars marked “parking enforcement” just for that purpose. Where are they on street sweeping days?
On my street, Webb Ave., street cleaning is a joke. Even if all cars are moved, the truck drives down the middle of the street spewing dirt, dust and debris to its east and west. Not surprising when you consider that the equipment can’t get close to the side of the street because it can’t fit underneath the mass of overgrown, unkempt decorative pear trees lining the street.
Editors note: We have a neighbor with two unruly Bradford pear trees. He finally called in a tree company called Armstrong to do a severe pruning. It looks much better, but they left messy debris in the street right after the sweepers had come by to clean the street. Ugh.
You would think that with the amount of tax dollars received from OG they could have a whole task force of people capable of planning street cleaning efficiently, I guess that just goes along with the other enforcement issues.
Marty. I like to ride around town on my bike, but in season it can be very dangerous, especially with drivers moving too fast and zipping around corners quickly, not knowing what is ahead as they turn on our village-like streets. And sometimes I would go the wrong way on a one way street because it is convenient to see the threats coming at you, But the danger is at the corners and now I force myself to follow the correct direction in order to lessen the risk and make the ride more enjoyable. I have never seen a policeman reprimand a bike rider, and they should. Maybe Chief Hunt should be given more street beat cops/ aux. cops, at least in season. —Paul @Blogfinger
This post reminds of a something I wrote to Blogfinger several years ago that he was nice enough to share on the blog. These ‘little things” add up to a lower quality of life whether it is the failure to adhere to these no parking signs (there were several violators on Olin St. as well), failure to yield to pedestrians in the cross walks (even if some of those pedestrians tend to crawl across the street), or any number of other minor infractions. When one adds the variety of “little things” to the big issues like the North End Redevelopment, the value equation in the Grove starts to change a bit.
My business is located in Kearny NJ and we have had street cleaning as long as I can remember. It is done twice a week on each street and really helps keeping the city streets presentable. The common sense approach of only doing one side of the street daily has give residents the simple option of parking on the opposite side so the street can be swept.
I have neighbors here in Ocean Grove that have difficulty walking, but they will be forced to walk blocks to accommodate the quadrant approach. Rather than punish us for a basic cleanliness, please change the rules and do one side one day and the opposite the next.
Oh, the ticket for not moving your car is $36. you can be sure not moving your car only happens once.

Speaking of unenforced laws – my pet peeve is the bicycleists who ride the wrong way on a one way street! Several weeks ago there were three riding abreast the wrong way so I was forced to stop. When I beeped & said it’s a one way street, they yelled obscenities at me – & this was a Sunday!
A Neptune policeman told me that if I hit a bicyclist going the wrong way the bicyclist would be cited. Of course, if I seriously hurt or killed one of them, that wouldn’t be much consolation.
Re the street cleaning, I agree that the cars need to be ticketed.
The Township could have made a small fortune today in parking fines. There were parking violators all over the place including direct line of sight from the police sub station! We have yellow zone invaders daily in my area and the police just cruise on by. Either enforce or eliminate the laws.
Actually I do not think any of this was co-ordinated very well..they put signs up no parking all day…..Then Look at central by Broadway tomorrow that area is suppose to be swept ..meanwhile there is no access to several streets… due to some kind of lines being put in… And there are several dumpsters on the streets going east west… So why issue permits for dumpsters during a one shot street cleaning…. and road work during a one shot street cleaning… Then you wonder why no one pays attention …
