Paul Goldfinger, Editor @Blogfinger   This is what success looks like at the Blogfinger OG Town-Wide Yard sale; even with some rain.       Join us on June 18, 2022 for the 11th Annual.

May 9, 2015. Ocean Grove, New Jersey:

The weather man let us down for the 4th Annual Blogfinger Town-wide Yard Sale.  After reports of fine weather for Saturday, fog and chilly temperatures rolled in this morning.  The sales all over town quickly burst into a hive of activity.  Out-of-towners and Grovers used the Sale maps and  address lists which we provided in addition to the Internet post and made the rounds rather quickly.

A lot of goods were sold within the first couple of hours. As predicted, most of the sellers and buyers enjoyed the social interactions as they found all sorts of goodies to buy.  We met a man who was buying gold and silver.  He told us that he paid one Grover over $2,000.00 for jewelry.

People drove, walked and biked to the sale locations.  At around 10:30 am it began to rain.  Although the rain didn’t last long, it did put a damper on the situation.  Some sellers folded their tents, while others battened the hatches  (thank goodness for porches) and then resumed the marketplace later.

I rode around on my bike after the rain and found almost everyone I came in contact with to be happy and excited  about the event.  By 2:00 pm, it began to drizzle and fizzle. But I have noticed that our yard sales tend to poop out by early to mid afternoon.

I met several sellers who live in Manhattan and Ocean Grove, and they love it in the Grove and they were getting a kick out of interacting with the folks.  All said they wished they could spend more time here.   Parking was no problem for this weekend, so many buyers drove around town, although I did meet some who walked or biked everywhere, from neighborhood to neighborhood.

Conversations. The heck with sale---on Heck.

Conversations. The heck with the sale—on Heck.

At our sale, Eileen and I had all sorts of interesting conversations about our for sale items, but others had to do with seeing Grovers who had returned from their winters away as well as other topics such as the guy who recommended the new Asbury beer garden as a place to hear first rate live music.   He said that he was just there to hear a Grammy nominee perform on guitar, doing jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt.

A woman even had something to say about the music we were playing.  She said that she was “acoustically sensitive.”  She was liking Nora Jones—–someone worth being distracted by. We were selling some vinyl 33 1/3 records, mostly of Broadway shows.

A Grover showed up who used to perform in Broadway shows, and we had a great discussion about Jerry Orbach’s career, the best songs in Guys and Dolls, and his life as an actor in The Fantasticks at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in The Village. (He played one of the fathers, and he sang “Plant a Radish.”)  He told us that the  show always began early, so a young performer, getting out of work at 9:30 pm in Greenwich Village, had all sorts of opportunities for good times.   His name?   Carl Swenson  (“Cards by Carl”  in Ocean Grove.)

I visited a number of our sites. Someone sold a bicycle for $150.00. Another couple quickly sold a bedroom set.

Several people approached me with a variety of  “scoops” for Blogfinger—in the spirit of the citizen reporter.  We received enough compliments and words of encouragement for BF to last quite a while.

Annual Town-Wide Yard Sale in Ocean Grove. Central and Heck.  May 10, 2014.   This year it is Saturday, May 7, 2016,  Paul Goldfinger photo ©

This poster from last year will be updated shortly. The 2016 sale, 5th Annual,  will be Saturday May 7 on Mother’s Day weekend.

This will be the Fifth  Annual Town-wide Yard Sale, sponsored by Blogfinger.  It will, as before, be held on the Saturday of the Mother’s’ Day weekend—May 7, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Rain or shine.

Each year has been an even better success in terms of number of sellers. Last year, despite some rain, the event was a success nevertheless, with 75 addresses participating in the Grove   (some addresses had multiple families together,) and our number of participants surpassed several towns at the shore.  Given the charms of Ocean Grove, it was a success from a yard sale perspective, but also as a fun social activity. Many visitors came to  OG from out of town. The bigger the participation, the better the event from the point of view of shoppers and yard sailors.   2015 link below.

The sale details are fairly simple.  We will maintain a Yard Sale page (usually posted around mid April)  at the top of Blogfinger which can be referenced at any time.  Any ads that are placed elsewhere, as in the Coaster or in fliers, will refer the reader to the Blogfinger.net  yard sale page where they will find a list of participants’ addresses grouped by neighborhood and including the nearest cross street for each address.  We will also post a list of sale items for each address.  Participants can add more items at any time just by emailing BF.

Anyone can join our listing—the more the merrier. You can even add your address right up to the day before the event.   If anyone wants to volunteer to work on promoting the event, printing and handing out fliers or posters, or otherwise helping us advertise it, you can contact us by email at Blogfinger@verizon.net.   We are open to any promotional ideas, but if you have one, please consider volunteering to implement it. We have no staff. Merchants can be listed as sponsors for a small fee.

This event is a win-win in town, because that weekend is usually not crowded, so there should be ample parking, and the merchants will  benefit from the visitors that we attract.   It is a fun day for those who are entertaining Moms here in the Grove.  The town-wide yard sale is a terrific social event, so it is more that just a find-a-treasure adventure .

To participate, just contact Blogfinger at our email location (Blogfinger@verizon.net).   Tell us your name, house address, cross street,  email address and your phone number. You can add the list of specific for sale items later.   Signups begin immediately, although we won’t be posting them for awhile.  We will set up an email list for us to communicate to participants. Only your sale items, address, and location information will be seen by the public, unless you also want your name or other contact information included.

During the week before the sale, we will advertise in the Coaster and the APP.  We will also boost the Blogfinger ads then as well.

So please start getting your stuff together and let us know. If any of you want to advertise elsewhere, be my guest.  Just include the Blogfinger web site address  (www.Blogfinger.net)  and refer the reader to our Yard Sale page.

As for a Neptune Township yard sale permit, you do need one.  Just go to the Mother Ship  (municipal building on Neptune Boulevard—entrance off Davis Ave. in the back) and go to the construction office.  The price for a community yard sale permit  is $5.00 per address.  Tell them you are with the town-wide yard sale; otherwise it will be $10.00.  Remember, you are not allowed to post notices on telephone poles or trees. You can post our flier on your own porch, so let us know if you want a flier.  It might be good to post a flier at each location along with some balloons  (Yellow is our official color.)

More information to follow.
