Rag doll. Vintage.
At Wegmans: Two little girl with Mom, ages about 3 and 5. Each carries a rag doll. One smiles at me and shows her doll:
Me: “Hi. Nice rabbit doll” which she waves at me, and the doll ears flop around. “Hi” she says, laughing. Mom grins.
Little girl #2 pops out from below . She has a scarecrow doll which she waves about at me while laughing. “Hi” say I.
Later I meet the threesome near the checkout
Both girls wave their dolls at me again.
Me: I like your dolls!
Girl #1: “I like your watch” She spotted my shiny metal watch.
Me to Mom: She has good taste. Someday she will have a Rolex. Mom’s grin expands.
Bagel Talk: I am sitting with my friend Ed, a local businessman. We are regulars at Bagel Talk.
. A panhandler walks in with a white pail which he offers to everyone: “Can you contribute to a handicapped person.?”
Panhandlers often hang out at that location, but outside.
Ed: I don’t like to give them money because they may buy drugs.
Me: Sometimes I do give, but mostly I don’t.
Ed: There is a woman who begs. She rides a bike and can actually have a conversation. Women panhandlers are rare.
Ed: I told her that if she comes to Bagel Talk I won’t give money, but I offered her breakfast any time she sees me there, and that offer is forever.
Me: Ed. You are a generous man. There’s a guy who holds the door for me. I give him $1.00. But maybe now I will go higher.
