The dark-hued Gypsy music is often described as romantic. It may be a coincidence, but Gypsies are often called Romas. Their music has its origins in eastern Europe and borrows from a number of ethnic musical styles.
The Glenn Miller classic “I Know Why and So Do You” references Gypsy violins: This version is with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and vocalist Paula Kelly as seen in the movie The Shape of Water.
"When you smile at me I hear the Gypsy violins, When you dance with me, I'm in heaven when the music begins."
Both of my Grandparents were Hungarian. Born in Hungary.
My childhood was spent listening to Hungarian records on their victrola. The violin was the dominant instrument. Every now and then they would jump up and dance the Czardas..a zippy Hungarian dance.. My Grandmother had a heart condition, my Grandfather had asthma and could hardly breathe, but that didn’t stop them.
PS. She taught me how to make stuffed cabbages.
I’ve never been to Europe, but would love to go to Hungary, and visit all the towns my Grandparents came from. Transylvania being one of them..
