During the May 25, 2024 meeting of the Home Groaners they announced a project:  to raise money to buy boxer shorts and T shirts for the  Jersey Shore Rescue Mission on Memorial Drive in Asbury Park.

As a regular contributor to the Mission, my response was a raised eyebrow.  The HOA claimed that “Jersey Shore Rescue Mission stated their most-needed items were boxers and t-shirts.”

This HOA proposal sounded  inadequate to me when the Rescue Mission has much greater needs than that.

Surly the HOA could have come up with a more substantial charitable effort for this worthy organization which helps the poor, addicted, and homeless  in our area.

In a recent fund raiser  mailing from the Rescue Mission regarding summer giving, there is no mention of boxer shorts or T shirts. But you can find such needs stated on their web site.

In the mailing they say,  “You don’t have to go far to help people who are hurting. Right here in our community–in our own backyard, there are neighbors who are wondering where they will sleep tonight. When they’ll eat their  next meal. And how they’ll overcome their desperate circumstances.

“But thanks to friends like you, who love your neighbors and show your compassion through your gifts to the Jersey Shore Rescue Mission.

“Throughout the 98 days of summer, your generosity will help us provide more than 8,320 meals, 3,220 nights of safe sleep, and hundreds of items of clothing.”    And more such as counseling.

So G. David Scott, CEO/Executive Director concludes with: “Your generosity will ensure we can continue to meet essential needs and provide life-restoring guidance this summer and all year round.”

“Food, Shelter, Care  and Restore your neighbors.”

Hopefully the HOA will do some substantial  charity work to bring in  dollars in addition to boxers and T-shirts  for this worthy cause.  If not, perhaps Grovers will send the Mission some cash.

And, by the way, the HOA didn’t mention  that this charity will change its name to “Market Street Mission–Jersey Shore.”

And for those who don’t know,  this operation is religious with Christianity at its core.

2025 update:      Name change–now part of Market Street Mission based in Morristown. It’s basically the same as before (ie Jersey Shore Rescue Mission.). If you contribute you can specify that your gift stays at the Jersey Shore.

If you want to contribute a large item such as a dining table or a dresser, you can contact the Mission. (732 988 0242)   and send them a photo.  They still do free pickup, but they may ask you for a specific donation to cover their costs. If they place a sellable value on your item, they may not ask you for a donation.

It’s good to teach kids about giving.  When I was a child, I saw a little blue metal box at my grandparents.  We would drop small change.   lt was to raise money for the State of Israel:
