Frightful February in the Grove…

February 4, 2024 by Blogfinger

Main Avenue, late Sunday afternoon. OG. 2/4/24 Blogfinger.net.  Click to enlarge. Just about everything is closed.

After a run of rainy days, we had a sunny Saturday and now a bleakish  Sunday afternoon.  But many came out earlier because of the sun and 40 degree weather.

Late Sunday afternoon. 2/4/24.” Deader than a doornail”  down-town.  Charles Dickens used the term. Nothing open.

At the Tumblety Howell  art gallery on Pilgrim Pathway, Terry was busy all day Saturday with framing jobs, but on Sunday it all dried up.  A handful of urban explorers were walking around at 4 pm Sunday, but little to do.

One customer sat outside the bakery while a worker vacuumed inside.

The Cottage Homes Interiors, a cute shop on Main near the Hardware Store (closed after 1 pm), was still open.  Eileen went in and  bought a small bouquet of pretty artificial flowers. The girl inside was wearing a sweatshirt that said “Hudson Yards.”

We managed to acquire a few factoids which we can roll into a WASSUP?? segment below. It’s actually something about nothing, like Larry David who starts his last season today.    For OG,  it amounts to a modest mix of maybes:

a.  The Victorian Grill will not be opening in the spring.

b.  The Starving Artist will not be opening in the spring.   The eatery collection in town is shrinking.

c . One Grover we know loves to go to to DJ’s Deli at 620 Mattison Avenue in A. Park. That is a small place but they have excellent soups, sandwiches, pancakes, eggs, and salads. They have a knack of creating fresh and home-style cooking all day until 4 pm. Closed Wed.

d. Have any of you Grovers tried the new modest restaurant in AP/Cookman  called “Main Stay?”  Send us a report.

e . There is talk that Nagle’s may reopen, but no sign of life so far.

f.  Bagel Talk is still quite good in the strip mall across from the Arts Center. They do well with salads and sandwiches.  Nice variety of items.

g.  The building which houses Days may have been acquired by the Camp Meeting.

h.  The Chamber of Commercials plans to dominate every Saturday available. They would dominate July and August if they were’t afraid of Grovers with pitchforks and Crusaders from the CMA.

And the CMA has lined up the Giant Flea market on June 1.  Through the summer, the CMA has scheduled hundreds of religious events.  Their annual booklet will reveal what they are doing with Saturdays in July and August.

And we haven’t heard what Neptune Township has up its sleeve for “we the people.”  Maybe they will be too busy setting up events for the rest of Neptune. After all, they view us as a cash cow for taxes and as a private sort of gated community for them to ignore.

There are only two events run by the secular home owner community in town, and both are in June:   Art on the Porch   (June 8)  and Town-wide Yard sale. (June 22)

So we the people who pay taxes and live here have little opportunity to schedule weekend events for ourselves “in season.”  Instead we must strategize our parking and dodge the mobs.

We can do some of our own secular things—Michael Badger doesn’t like our use of the word “secular” so lets do like Joni Mitchell and try kissing on Main Street, push up bras, tight dresses, do the latest dance craze,, parties, drinking beers, and rock ‘n rolling in the Grove
