Loving Vincent—a movie about Van Gogh

January 16, 2024 by Blogfinger

Vincent Van Gogh. “The Starry Night.”

By Paul Goldfinger, Editor @Blogfinger.   June 2023

There is a movie playing at the Showroom in Asbury Park on Cookman Avenue about Vincent Van Gogh and the events surrounding his death. Loving Vincent is  a fascinating mystery story, but the most impressive thing about it is that it is an animated film made by over 100 artists over 7 years who painted in the Van Gogh style.   They used well known actors, and the animation was made by painting over their film images.  The plot is controversial because most experts don’t agree with the film’s conclusion.

The film is so unique, and for those who are interested in art, this will be a special experience.  Loving Vincent  is being “held over” in Asbury. Our main criticism is that it is too long.

LIANNE LA HOVAS:  “Starry Starry Night” from the soundtrack of Loving Vincent.

The trailer is intriguing. I want to see this movie.
It reminds me of the best animated feature film for 2015 – Anomalisa, a gem that many have not found.

McLean’s “Vincent” is so beautifully sad it is almost painful.

And VINCENTE Minnelli directed “Lust for Life” which garnered awards for Douglas as Van Gogh and Quinn as Gauguin. It was based on a novel, but 61 years later still gets a 100% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes (only 46 films have a perfect score).

Don McLean wrote this song in 1971 about Van Gogh. He called it “Vincent” but it is known as “Starry Starry Night.”

Don’t forget about the classic 1956 bio film about Van Gogh called “Lust for Life” with Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn.

If you like art house films, put your name on the Showroom email list.
