As you know, today the New York Times ran a front page article describing a delayed evacuation from Ft.Myers and other high risk places due to poor judgment on the part of Lee County emergency hurricane officials. The suggested allegation is that the delay placed many people at risk of death due to the horrible Hurricane Ian. The deaths in Lee County from Ian were higher than any other Florida location.
But the article did not make the case that the delay caused more deaths than might have occurred if the evacuation had been ordered on Monday instead of Tuesday. Ian hit Ft. Myers with full force on Wednesday. 9/28/22.
Governor DeSantis reviewed the situation and agreed with Lee County officials that the shifting hurricane path justified the decisions on timing which were made by Lee officials.
The NY Times implied that further data assessment of deaths might show that lives might have been saved if the Lee evacuation had occurred on Monday instead of Tuesday.
The NY Times is a liberal newspaper whose biased political coverage is such that it would be content to find fault with DeSantis.
This front page piece could cast a shadow on DeSantis, but actually, the article really doesn’t now prove any mishandling on his part. So far, “no hurt–no foul.”
But the Governor did support the Lee County evacuation decisions, so let’s wait and see.
Kevin. We know that about 700 people refused to leave Ft. Myers Beach, and they chose that course themselves. It is that group that probably comprised many deaths, so failure to force early evacuations would not affect that group. —Paul
Those that claim to project the weather tend to get it wrong as many times as right. Even so, many people still would not leave their homes for any number of reasons. That is every individuals choice and cannot be blamed on any single politician
I no longer bother with the NYT , it has become a glorified National Enquire.
NY Times has lost its way. Such a great reputation being ruined by bias and conjecture without learning and reporting all the facts. Just the facts that support their aggressive views which help continue to rip apart this country.
Here is something I came across that helps shed some light on the issue. If the NY Times read this then maybe they would have thought the entire West coast of Florida needed to be evacuated..
