Cercis siliquastrum , Mediterranean redbud, its common name, Judas Tree, derives from the belief that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from this tree species after he betrayed Jesus. In the US we have the Cercis canadensis, the Eastern redbud. The trees are in the legume family and the flowers are edible.
Oops – I am the ‘anony’! Yes, I do know the name of the tree (Judas or American redbud) but not the biblical connection. Now I’ll have to go look that up.
Dogwoods, Judas trees and Vivaldi’s Spring – a perfect trio.

Anony: Thank you for ID’ing the Judas Tree. Do you know the biblical connection for naming this tree after Judas?
