I knew George Tice through Fotocare in NYC and David Vestal (who preferred Dektol 1:1) too (thru Pratt) . Both great black and white printers . Also knew Phil Perkis (3x time Guggenheimer) .
As for Paterson, Jim Jarmusch made a movie about Paterson . The 2021 West Side Story remake was filmed there .
Patterson has a 1950’s/ ’60’s look & vibe to it. Who knows ? Patterson could be the next Asbury Park if Atlantic City isn’t .
Not all photographers were good printers(and vice versa). I miss B&W printing . I miss Panatomic-x, Velour Black, and photobooths .
Alas time marches on and change is inevitable . Some digital prints do look as good or even better then silver prints . Maybe though B&W printing will make a comeback as have records(supposedly). We’ll see (pun intended) .
Thanks Frank. Photography has endless possibilities. So it depends on what you are doing. I like “fine art” photography, although the latest images being shown in galleries seem to often be gimmicky—made possible by digital.
It is a luxury when one can focus on fine art.
My taste is old fashioned, shaped by years of studying the masters. I have a large photo book collection.
But sometimes the masters are also mysterious to me. I took a printing course with NJ’s George Tice. He is a master printer and artist.
He said that he could spend the rest of his life just photographing in run-down Paterson. Really?
But he is the same guy who produced about twenty books–all different such as his book on the Amish and, in Europe–Stone Walls, Gray Skies.
From him I learned the beauty of the print—in of itself, apart from the subject matter. I have one of his platinum prints home–it is my favorites.
So, horizontal or vertical—these sort of issues are small potatoes.
Paul : I shoot mostly stock. So never knowing what will be requested. I shoot both vertical & horizontal, near & far away, and leave space for possible captions and headlines .
Most cell phone fotos are vertical as that is normal holding position . Few think to turn cell phone horizontal . Always thought it interesting that movies are always horizontal(except for Brian Enos Art films & some retailers in store video displays)
Also interesting is that most cameras are designed horizontally. I don’t think of format ratio or orientation as “style” or a “look and symmetry” .
Lately I like circular (not necessarily fisheye though) fotos.
Frank: I know you are a photographer, so I do welcome anything you have to say about photography.
If you ask Jean, she will tell you that I dislike verticals. I prefer the classic “landscape” view. Not only for the “look and symmetry” but also because, like most editors, I insist on a certain style for Blogfinger, and that includes landscape photos.

Cool foto (no pun intended) . Must have been taken quite early in morning . Fotos don’t have to be rectangular . I prefer this one as a square with bottom cropped .
What a gorgeous picture! Asbury Park should use it to promote their city.
