Woodlawn Park c. 1905. Post card. Ocean Grove, NJ. Now there is a fenced-in bell dedicated to firemen.
Woodlawn Park is the historic name for what is now Firemen’s Park. The Alday Memorial Fountain was installed at the turn of the 20th century, and the park was renamed Alday Park.
It wasn’t dedicated to firemen until the 1950’s.
Ocean Grove is a historic town on the National and State Historic Registers. You can see that the authentic history of this park does not include fences around the central fountain. A lot of us restored our homes to authenticity. What about that park?
NORAH JONES “American Anthem” from the soundtrack of The War.
When the Founders’ Park fountain was restored, why is there no fence around it? There is none because such a fence is not historic.
Then why is there a locked fence area in the center of Founders Park? Is it to protect the bell? Then why aren’t we protecting the much more valuable Founders fountain?
Ironically, if the North End Plan is implemented, there will be public areas at the boardwalk from which the public will be excluded.
