Editor’s Note: The George Washington Bridge was officially dedicated in 1931. It connects Manhattan to the Borough of Fort Lee in Bergen County, New Jersey. After some discussion, it was decided to name it after George Washington, although Jack Bredin, who used to live over there on the Jersey side, says that the original name was “The Fort Lee Bridge.”
The world’s largest American flag is flown for certain holidays including July 4, Martin Luther King’s birthday, and the 9-11 commemoration among others.
Jack’s wonderful up-to-date version of the bridge, done in his usual fanciful style, includes the lower deck and a woman in a mini.

When the lower level was opened in 1962 it was nicknamed “Martha Washington”.
