It was heavy rain on the evening of Dec. 9, emerging from the George Washington Bridge. The tie up on the Jersey side was worse than in Manhattan.
It’s not clear what was wrong, but the visibility was poor due to the dark and the rain. The lines on the roads were invisible, and the lighting was poor. There were dangers all along the route, including after getting off the Parkway at the Asbury exit 102. Thank goodness the temperature was above freezing.
The trip was 3 hours long and very scary, although we did not witness a single accident. But there were some close calls; especially when changing lanes, stopping abruptly, and turning off at exits. And, as we get older, night vision becomes problematic.
A neighbor also got caught in it, spending 2 1/2 hours out of Ft. Lee getting back to Ocean Grove.
It doesn’t pay to drive in and out of New York. Try the train, bus and ferry.
