At least this plan may free up some groups for our parade which would otherwise be busy on the 4th—-for example the Mummers. Last 4th there was hardly any marching music. This year we are promised marching bands.

Believe this is not the first time the OG parade has been held on a day other than July 4th. My recollection is that back in the 90’s the parade was held on the Saturday before or right after the Fourth of July. Are there any longtime OG residents who can verify?

The Independence Day parade is not on July 4th? You’ve got to be kidding. CMA has coopted a beautiful tradition that honors our freedom and subverted it’s meaning for their own self-aggrandizement.

“Knocking on Heaven’s Door “is a reference to the religious community which founded Ocean Grove in 1869.

And putting the guns in the ground “I can’t shoot them any more.” refers to the fact that OG was founded shortly after the Civil War (1861-1865). Veterans of the Civil War visited Ocean Grove, and a large crowd of them were in the Great Auditorium when President Grant came to the Grove.

OGrover: The NERP crowd likes to imagine that the new plan recalls the past history of the Grove and tries to justify the pseudo-Victorian design which will be presented to the HPC for their North End commercial/condoized district.

But, as you point out, and we have pointed out in the past, the real history of Ocean Grove began with tents and then small cottages. The North End Hotel was built in 1909, about 40 years after the founding.

The original North End plan was supposed to have 25 single family homes, and it would have fit right into the existing neighborhoods of OG (as specified by zoning and the Master Plan)

The idea that the big old hotel and commercial district fulfills some sort of historic imperative is nonsense. Just ask any historian about the authentic history of that North End.

The north end was originally a tenting ground. Old maps show it to be.
