Johnny Mercer, the great songwriter, is a son of Savannah.  He is buried there, and the memorial says , “Buddy, I’m a kind of poet and I’ve gotta lotta things to say.”

K.D. LANG sings “Skylark.” Johnny Mercer wrote the words, and Hoagy Carmichael (who wrote “Georgia on My Mind”)  wrote the music.  The song is featured in the Clint Eastwood film: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, filmed in Savannah.

Waterseller is quite correct. This beautiful home was begun by one of Johnny Mercer’s ancestors who was a Confederate General but who died before its completion. It is also the house later owned by Jim Williams, the antique dealer who figures as a principal character in the book and later movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”.

Interestingly, Johnny Mercer was also a descendent of American Revolution General Hugh Mercer, killed in the Battle of Princeton.

    Interesting point is that Johnny
    Mercer never lived there.
