PAUL SIMON: “Quality”
Rich: Cubacan really is a beautiful restaurant. It was our first visit and we were impressed by the attention to detail. It is a classy place. We shared a calamari appetizer which came with two dipping sauces. The calamari was perfectly fried, and many restaurants get it wrong. One sauce was tomato based while the other, green in color, was spicy due to the jalapeño peppers.
We also shared the paella which was fine for one, but a bit small for two, unless you start with an appetizer as we did. The paella was tasty, but the chunks of breast meat chicken were dry. However, the mussels, shrimp, scallops, clams, and thin sliced chorizo sausage were nicely prepared, as was the seasoned saffron rice. The paella was served in a traditional covered metal pot.
They also have a mariscada which looked great from afar, and there were two steaks available—a hanger steak and a Churrasco steak served with peppers, onions, black beans and a chimichurii sauce. They have wine by the bottle and by the glass. I had a French pinot noir for $10.00. Eileen had her usual pino grigio cold Italian white wine for $9.00.
Although we didn’t partake, the dessert menu was fabulous and contained some appealing dessert wines and port.
I really enjoyed the view out to the ocean. You can sit outside on the boardwalk deck or up on the roof deck. People- watching is really good including many beautiful young women dining at Cubacan, dressed first class, accompanied by guys in jeans and T shirts or just out with their friends.
There also is a bar scene at Cubacan. The music was just right: soft and unobtrusive, and the Latin songs and rhythms complemented the whole package.
Eileen and I will go back to Cubacan. http://www.cubacan.net. And we didn’t mind the metered parking—easy to use and $2.00 for 2 hours, right across the street. Free parking is available if you walk over from the Grove.
After dinner we went to Just Another Days. They have a lovely shop there right on the boardwalk, near the Casino. Eileen was celebrating her birthday,so she had the world’s tiniest cup of hazelnut truffle latte ice cream, while I had a “short-shot” hot fudge sundae, which is a new Day’s concept for the diet conscious who like to fall off the wagon once in a while.
Potted Palms, Woman in shades not overly dressed strolling by perhaps pondering what this eatery serves while under her right arm a jetty pokes it’s way into the shoreline, bikes locked to railings of a boardwalk, very nice table with wine and glasses but the beverage can removes the mystique of fine dining, those ugly blue but essential trash receptacles and a photographer who must know a staff member or two to be inside prior to opening of business for the day on the boards of Asbury Park, NJ. but my first impression was the west coast of Florida, Sarasota, Naples shoreline perhaps. That was fun……..keep them coming Paul……………………………b down sunday
Congratulations to Maureen and thanks to all those early morning participants. Maureen: Go see Rich in his cove at Smuggler’s Cove on Main Ave. in OG. He has a prize for you. Paul
