Researching Ocean Grove’s Past

March 16, 2013 by Blogfinger

Dear Blogfinger,

On Feb. 28, Kathy Arlt made a post about the Osborne House.   I am interested in whether or not a photo I have of an Osborne House could be the same Inn as your Osborne House.  See attached.  I am just beginning to investigate and discover the information about the photo I have.  A confirmation or best speculation on the Osborne House would be helpful and appreciated.

Most sincerely,
Tina Millard

Thank you. Anna of HSOG was able to confirm that my photo is of the Osborne House of Ocean Grove, NJ.
Liz writes about Ted Bell, which further interests me. My great grandfather’s name is surname is Bell. Possibly a distant relative?

I can’t be absolutely sure, of course, but this photo certainly seems to be the Ocean Grove Osborne House. The railing detail on the second floor floor porch matches; the height of the ground floor porch seems the same; and the entrance is on the right, rather than in the center of the building.

An article on the reason for the name change from Osborn to Osborne can be found at this link:

Anna is at HSOG Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Ted Bell will be back end of April. Chris Flynn is another good source. I hope that helps

Rev. Osborn, who founded Ocean Grove, had no E at the end of his name. In Kathy Arlt’s article, she mentioned that the Osborn House later changed its name to the Osborne House. What is the significance of that? Who knows?
