SOUNDTRACK: The choice of music for my photographs is fairly arbitrary, but it has to have something to do with the visual. I try to find a connection but many things could fit.

The way that the brain processes music and visuals together is complicated. I guess we can locate it in the right brain, but that is about it. I’m glad you can’t reduce it to science.

Instead it’s emotional. When music is written for a movie, the composer watches the film and tries to match music to it. There is no single answer. The process usually  involves music without words. It’s better that way.

This piece of music is from a film. You will win a prize if you are the first to identify the film AND the composer. It’s a beautiful movie, and this marvelous theme could fit many situations. —Paul Goldfinger

EDITOR’S NOTE: The winner is  Thomas Cos of Ocean Grove who correctly identified the music from  the 1988 Italian film Cinema Paradiso which won the 1989 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

He also identified the composer Ennio Morricone  ( 1928-2020) who, in a fifty year career, wrote music for over 500 movies and TV series.   —-PG
