Editor’s Note. Residents Complain: “Power is still out and we need our Neptune leaders to talk to us.”

November 7, 2012 by Blogfinger

We heard from a long-time Ocean Grove resident that people in his/her neighborhood are “frustrated, cold, sick and upset.” They want to hear from our Neptune Township leaders as to why they remain without power and what these leaders can do to help them.  This citizen would not allow us to use his/her name, but I promised to post his/her concerns anyhow.  Normally we allow anonymous comments but we do not allow anonymous letters to the editor.  Let’s call this category “an anonymous comment by phone call.”

Evidently, the power remains out from Central Avenue to the ocean on Abbott Avenue and Broadway, but we have also heard of troubles on Sea View, Webb, Embury and Surf.

Hopefully, we will hear from the Mayor about this.  When we interviewed him in Shark River Hills about a week ago, he was swamped with multiple storm-related issues.  But it is time for him to make a statement directed to Ocean Grovers regarding this terrible situation.

Paul Goldfinger, Editor.

ps :  It’s 10:50 a.m., and we are getting brown outs.  Meanwhile, the storm has barely gotten out of the starting gate.

It would be nice to see some of our Neptune politicians in the Ocean Grove area that was hit the hardest with hurricane Sandy (to show concern and be sensitive to our losses) Especially since we were very active in getting you elected

This area of Ocean Grove still does not have electricity, heat, hot water and some of our losses range from $45,000 to $200,000. A lot of these residents have been temporarily displaced until their utilities come on.

Remember this is the area that had to deal with problems of the Broadway Drainage.Project(flooding). We are very sorry about what happened in Shark River Hills amd we feel for those residents of Neptune. Our prayers and thoughts go out to all people that have had to go through this ordeal.

I agree with the post about suffering not being a competition. The stress of a disaster manifests itself differently for each person. People need to feel supported and understood. It is an acute stress disorder in some cases and I would urge folks feeling these natural feelings to seek support. Sorry to hear things are so hard for so many.

Am I missing the compassion gene? Possibly

I have no tolerance for complaining. “I’m cold, it’s dark, we need help” I see people complain and whine about their situations. We saw this coming days away, those who failed to prepare adequately did so at their own peril.

This is what Florida and the Gulf face every year, we are just lucky.

The comment that ocean grove is forgotten smacks of self-centered thought

Bullets: Why is it necessary to rank the degree of suffering? OG is not in a competition with Shark River over who is suffering more. If one Grover is miserable, cold, and uncomfortable, then it is one too many. Are you missing the compassion gene?

Aside from power loss, how many homes were damaged by the storm? Water damage? Trees on cars and homes?

I don’t see the kind of suffering in ocean grove that I see in shark river. The biggest loser is the CMA, with the loss to the beach and boards.

  6. on November 8, 2012 at 6:18 pm Doubting Thomas

Sarcasm is a rude and ineffective way to make a point. If the mayor were to come here and walk those streets where Grovers are having a miserable time it will serve the purpose of raising morale, showing he cares, telling his plans in person and comforting the stricken—-like he did near the Shark River Marina.

Not to compare this to 9-11, but do you remember Giuliani and GW Bush at ground zero? What do you think they were doing there and why were their visits in person helpful?

I don’t know why the mayor doesn’t have an answer… it’s an easy one too

WE JUST GOT HIT WITH A HURRICANE! A real live hurricane, the kind that rips down power lines and destroyed infest infrastructure

Recovery will take months, not days. Whole homes were destroyed. I doubt any ocean grove resident had a concrete floating dock barrel through their living room or a 40 foot boat on their porch

Yet another storm, and OG is screaming bloody murder. Guess what folks? The mayor can’t tell you why your power isn’t on. JCP&L is not run by Neptune Township, of which Ocean Grove is a part of. It’s a publically traded company based out of Texas. The mayor can’t do anymore than you can, which is call, complain, ask, wheedle, demand to speak to supervisors, wash, rinse, repeat. Does it suck? Dear Lord, yes. But don’t blame the mayor. He didn’t grant JCP&L a local monopoly on electrical utilities in the area.

Nita Nova – Go to Shark River Hills before talking about hardest hit. I don’t believe there is a boat in your backyard or your house got sucked out into the Atlantic when the tide receded.

Asking the Mayor why the power isn’t on isn’t going to get you anywhere. Ask JCP&L why your power isn’t on. Or better yet, ask the president of the board of public utilities why your power isn’t on. His name is Chris Christie.

  10. on November 7, 2012 at 1:14 pm Cold on Webb

Power is still out on Webb as well, between Beach and Central.

  11. on November 7, 2012 at 1:05 pm Be Thankful

The power supply is the responsibility of JCPL, not the Township leaders in response to the anonymous phone call complaint posted. I still do not have electricity or heat on Embury Ave, however I will remain patient as some shore communities don’t even exist anymore. Be thankful you have a home that will substain electricity when resolved.

As a full-time resident on the first block of Abbott Ave, I am disillusioned, freezing, frustrated, and sad. After experiencing an unbelievable surge of good will and helpfulness from our immediate neighbor, assessing all our losses and doing whatever possible to aid each other, we are now left uninformed and forgotten.

None of us are unaware or unfeeling for others worse off than we, but it is 11 days without power, and no one has communicated any prospect of when we might see relief.

Moreover, it appears that priorities are convoluted. It is a fact that we were the hardest hit in the Grove–rampant flooding and destruction. Yet we are the last to see any relief. That paired with another potentially crippling storm is more than we can bear.

We need and Deserve some explanation.and action.

Had at least four flickers in the past 1/2 hour…not a good sign. And we’re back on Lawrence – have had power since the weekend. Winds are relatively nothing right now so not sure of the cause. Hearing lots of fire whistles nearby and somebody on a bullhorn/loudspeaker but was inside so couldn’t hear what was being said.

Get ready for the dark again, folks. And for those who never got it back, I sympathize…was without for 6-days and it was not fun, especially with a 4 and 6-year old. And now it’s getting colder.

I hope these piles of sand (burms) can provide some temporary protection from the next storm for those houses that were hit the hardest on Broadway, Ocean and Abbott Avenue. We have not recovered from this first storm and still do not have electricity, heat and hot water,

Please remember these residents still need help with food, shelter, etc. Please check on these residents to see what they need at this time. They desperately need a support system especially moral support and prayers.

Editor’s Note: Sometimes we get a comment that is particularly important, so you may notice it posted in two locations. Paul @Blogfinger

No Embury does not. There were trucks down the block yesterday but still no power.

  17. on November 7, 2012 at 10:44 am Harriet

I believe you are on the same circuit as we are on Abbott and we still have no electric…I can’t believe they can’t come back for a simple fix that would benefit so many FULL time residents! We’ve (Abbott Ave residents) have called everyone we can think of to no avail…..any other ideas???
