Letter to the Editor: Dog Beach?

April 26, 2012 by Blogfinger

To the Editor:

April 26, 2012:

Hi, I’m new to OG and have really enjoyed the community thus far (6 months). I also really appreciate the pet friendly environment and the respectful nature of the pet owners in picking up after themselves. It keeps our open spaces useable for everyone. I have thoroughly enjoyed taking my black lab Caymus for her daily walks, especially on the beach. I haven’t broken it to her yet that those come to a screeching halt here soon.

Has there been any forward movement on the “OG Dog Beach” initiative that Cindy (Pet Boutique) is involved in? If there are opportunities to assist in that endeavor in any way or if and when public support is required, I would like to help. My hope is that I can get information updates from Blogfinger.  Thanks much for keeping us all
“in-the loop.”

As I mourn the last hurrah with the dogs … where is the AP dog beach? And is there parking?

By the Casino would be perfect. As far as clean-up, a small, confined area would make it more difficult for errant (and lazy) dog owners to get away with not cleaning up. Many of us already clean up after others; I think a small area could be easily maintained.

The main problem is clean-up. Unless the area is monitored frequently it could get out of hand quickly. While a lot of owners are diligent cleaning up after their pets, many are not. A quick survey of the small ‘island parks’ along Asbury Ave., for example, prove my point.

Asbury Park has a dog beach. Before 9 am and after 6 PM. It’s GREYT for business

I’m a dog owner, and I would like to see this, but! All around town there are people who refuse to clean up after their dogs (just cleaned up two fresh sets in front of the house this morning!), that could be a problem!

A small dog park in front of Jones sounds like a good idea. I suggest that you and other dog owners get together and discuss this idea with OGCMA. They own the land and their permission would be needed to set this up. So please don’t be sad. Rather be pro-active and create something nice for your dog and other dogs/dog owners in OG.

Sorry if I seem pushy. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to be more pro-active and to encourage others to be so also. D.I.Y. (Doing it yourself) is far better then commiseration or waiting for someone else to do it.

Very best of luck with this venture.

The dog beach in AP has wacky hours. 6pm – 830am. I don’t know about you but I’d like to have my girl on the beach in the afternoon, and spend the day. Why not a small dog park of sorts in front of Jones? Whats there now? It’s an eyesore and everyone I talk to with dogs (I go to Fireman’s Park) has said at some point… “This should be fenced in for them” or “I wish we had a dog park”. Literally every house on my block has a dog, maybe 1 or two don’t. Sad.

@mike: yes to AP, and yes to size

Unless they put it in front of Jones or the Casino

Isn’t our beachfront a little too small and crowded to designate a dog beach? Also, Isn’t there already a dog beach in ap that doesn’t require badges?
