The other side of Asbury Park is not an actual location.  Rather it is a state of mind, depending on “where you stand.”*   Asbury is coming back from a broken place in its history. It is slow going, and it’s having some problems now which are complex, but it also is becoming a source of light—actually a place of multiple beacons of light.

You could look at it as a tale of two cities, in its most general perspective.  Clearly there is the more upscale region to the east, and the poorer and more ethnic zone to the west.  But both areas are places where hope lives—some of it fulfilled , some of it in the midst, and some of it looking sad and risky.   But it is coming along, and some of its future can be visualized and focused on, as occurs through a camera lens.

So our series of “The Other Side of Asbury” looks all over that city. And our camera lens shows it in all its diversity.  And what you see, will be different each time, and that makes Asbury Park a fascinating place.

* Eugene Atget became famous photographing the old Paris before much of its architecture was torn down to make way for a modern city.  But something about his images of old buildings and street life made them stand out as special.  When a professor of photography from the Savannah School of the Arts was asked about how those photographs differed from anybody’s snapshots, he said,  “It’s where you stand.”
