Kitty Hawk (NC) pier. Dave Philo of OG  submitted this photo.  He likes this pier, but would prefer Victorian street lights and benches instead.

In the event that the 500 foot OG fishing pier, severely damaged during Sandy, gets rebuilt someday, but without the fishing club building at the end, what would you like it to look like?    You can just comment below  and describe your vision, or send a photo. We have already heard from some gazebo fans.

Note that the historic OG fishing pier, when first built in 1891, wasn’t  a fishing pier at all.  Rev. Stokes  (1891) used it at first for a very practical purpose—to support sewage pipes into the ocean.   The historic fishing club was established a few years later.

CARLY SIMON:

2019 addendum:  (re-post  and update from 2015 to 2019: )   This year the CMA plans a major fund raising effort with several goals in mind including rebuilding the OG Fishing Pier.

The CMA released a diagram of the new pier   (above)  which will be in the shape of a cross.    But that shape should be quite functional, with more surface area for fishermen to fish and gawkers to gawk.

The CMA wording* suggests that there will be no private fishing club.  They say, “A new pier would be entirely open to the public…….”
