Editor’s note:  This poll is definitely of limited value because it is not scientific, and  we don’t know who is voting.    There are some other issues as well regarding accuracy.     But despite  that vulnerability, we can view it as an opinion sample.

You can decide for yourself if you want to be impressed  by the result.  Personally, I usually  find some truth in these polls, especially when we get a large number of voters, but there was an incident in the past where someone summoned a large mailing list to stuff our ballots when a contentious issue was at stake.  But most of the time I think it is Blogfinger readers who vote here and who generally live here or have some relationship to Ocean Grove.——-Paul

POLL CONCLUDED APRIL 29, 2013. SEE RESULTS BELOW.   This poll received the most votes of any that we have had on Blogfinger.  251 voted and expressed their opinion.  The issue seems settled in the Grove where a large majority have given their support to the Neptune Township Police Department regarding this matter.  It remains to be seen if the Asbury Park Council chooses to make a fuss over something which would bring them some more embarrassment.

The new ways we communicate raise a variety of questions about manners. Emails are instantaneous, to be distinguished from a letters which may take a few days to be delivered. In the past, it was acceptable to leave letters unanswered for a week. But does the speed of email mean that the answers must be rushed? Let’s take a shot at this question of manners by suggesting an arbitrary time limit. Feel free to comment if needed to make your point. —Paul Goldfinger

This poll has been officially closed. We had a record number of participants at 320. The vote was close. A total of 162 (51%) voted YES to disinvite Kirk Cameron, while 150 (47% ) voted NO, not to disinvite. Eight people (3%) were unsure.

Thanks to all who participated, including the many commenters who voiced their opinions under the two posts (see links below), where 105 comments can be found. The dialogue that occurred was frank and sometimes contentious, but you won’t find another venue where such an interesting and helpful discussion could take place:

We have had a lively debate in our comments section regarding the Kirk Cameron controversy, but the number who participated is quite small compared to our total number of readers. So now is a chance for the silent majority to weigh in.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Tuesday morning:   The results of this poll have been compromised by the Ocean Grove United which sent an email to 74 of its members asking them to go to this site and vote YES.  This occurred just a few hours after we posted the poll.  Usually our polls are populated by the usual ebb and flow of visitors to the blog—a randomly varied group of people who offer their opinions.  But this attempt to promote a group of YES votes is unfortunate because it skews the result. We know of no opposite campaign that might create some balance.

Rather than take down the whole poll, you can weigh its validity for yourselves.  We never have claimed that our polls are scientific, but   they usually  do offer some sense of our readers’  opinions.  However, in my view, this poll is essentially useless.  You may, however, continue to vote—for now.

NOTE  JUNE 12:  We have just learned that the mailing list referred to above was not , in fact, the OGU mailing list.  Instead it was the personal mailing list of a Grover who was urging her/his friends to vote YES.  I apologize for that error.

Reading to dogs at the Neptune Library. Photo by Mary Walton

By Paul Goldfinger, MD, editor @Blogfinger

Mary Walton, literary editor @ Blogfinger, posted an article on March 7  (Library article link) which described how the Neptune Township Library has had to ration services even though demand has gone up. She described the  budget cuts and significant cost cutting that have occurred. Mary reported that classes were eliminated, personnel downsized, hours reduced, and fewer books were being purchased. The library doesn’t even belong to the county system, thus limiting the availability of  borrowed books.

We ran a poll  (Blogfinger library poll ) which asked if people were satisfied with the services at the Neptune Township Public Library.

71 votes were obtained, and remarkably, despite the cutbacks, 66% said “yes”, 23% said “no” and 8% were unsure.

Isn’t it interesting that most Ocean Grovers who voted are still happy with the current Neptune Library despite its drawbacks and significant cutbacks? Why do you suppose that is?  Perhaps the yes vote would have been 90% last year; we don’t have that information.

Maybe we need to re-frame the issue, and for those who use the Neptune Library regularly, let’s tell librarian Marian Bauman specifically what you like and what you don’t like about our library. Take a look at their web site  to find out about their current services and programs.

We have ended this poll on October 2, 2011. The question posed was whether the OG Homeowners Association should begin each meeting  (as they have traditionally done) with a prayer.

We had 211 participants, the most on any prior Blogfinger poll. 39% voted yes;  58% voted no;  3% were unsure.

We have 22 comments which can still be read below.
