Timothé Chalamée is a remarkable young actor who is capable of pulling a difficult part over his head and then emerging as the character he was meant to play. I saw him play Bob Dylan and I loved that movie.
The movie which opened in theaters today (Christmas Day) is called “Marty Supreme.” It is a true story about a dynamic young New Yorker from the 1940’s who wants to become world famous as a professional ping pong player named Marty Reisman..
Chalamée is a versatile character actor, and I have read enthusiastic reviews, so I know that I will like it. I’m the same way with Woody Allen.
I’m not sure that I will go to a theater to see it now, because I haven’t done so in some time, but I will be tempted by “Marty Supreme.” The director is an experienced maker of fascinating movies “on the edge” named Josh Safdie. He usually works with his brother, but this time he is doing it on his own.
I have heard some interviews which describe Josh Safdie as a perfectionist with a talent for making exciting and creative films where one of his strengths is in his casting. Some of his actors are actually characters who are amateurs but bring some unique qualities to the film.
We will review this film after we get to see it.
