In 1944, the Allies (Britain and USA) decided to begin the invasion of “Fortress Europe” by crossing the Channel and landing at Sicily. Much of the Italian army quickly gave up, but the going north was still difficult.
The destruction of the Abbey at Monte Casino was a poor strategy because bombing this ancient site provided no advantage to the Allies.
