What would Stokes say if this pilgrim were to show up on his watch? Well, we can get an idea from reviewing the 1880 Eleventh Annual Report of the Camp Meeting Association. Elwood H. Stokes, President.
In it is a police report. Quite a few folks were sent to County Jail, and here are some of the categories:
–“Persons stopped with improper bathing clothes: 91”
–“Persons brought out of the water with improper clothes: 17”
–“Dogs arrested”. 26
—“Brass bands prevented entering: 1.”
Here is my favorite quote: “It is a great satisfaction to know that while all this business is being attended to, the skill of our police justice is such, that very few, almost none outside of the parties concerned, know of anything going on.”
However, as to whether Stokes would have noticed the young lady above on Pilgrim Pathway, he spent a lot of time watching the ocean. He was a poet, and this is from his poem “White-Winged Ships”
“Far away as the eyes can see,
Faint, white-winged ships sail silently;
I sit and watch and wait to see
What white-winged ships will bring to me”
