Sweet songs of Christmas… »

A Christmas memory: The Manchester Inn, Ocean Pathway in the Grove. 1880-2010.

August 24, 2025 by Blogfinger

Speaking of OG Christmas traditions, here is the Manchester Inn, decked out for the holiday.  Paul Goldfinger photograph, shooting with Kodak film . December, 1998.  Silver gelatin  print made in our OG darkroom.  Click to enlarge.

The Manchester Inn’s owner had received permission to convert it into condominiums, but it burned to the ground during a terrible March 2010 storm where 4 buildings were destroyed and a few more damaged.

It should have been replaced by a single family house, but the Neptuners, acting as predicted and  gave a variance for two extra tall single family houses at that precious and historic site.

MAUDE MAGGART    “The Song Is Ended But the Melody Lingers On”  by Irving Berlin who wrote “White Christmas.”  Berlin was a Jewish immigrant from Russia  and this song has a distinctly Yiddish flavor in its melody.  Many composers of movies and Broadway are from that era.

Fascinating! But what happened to that plan? I know that the current Master Plan says the same.

I happened to come across the following this morning.

“The Association a year ago adopted a regulation prohibiting the creation of other than one-family dwellings, except by special permit.” OGT 15 Nov. 1963
