“Elwood H. Stokes” 1815-1867. We usually date Ocean Grove’s founding at 1869, and that is true, but the year of the Camp Meeting Association’s Charter was 1870. Thus, in 1869, it was unofficial.

Thanks David; I will change the plaque from copper to bronze. I should have known because I still have my baby shoes which are bronze. And thanks again for your historic insights. –Paul
The Stokes statue has a secret and it regards the two recesses on the sides. The bronze is not exactly square and the granite made accordingly.
Unfortunately, when the base was set, they got the orientation wrong. This was not recognized until the time of installation after the “Stokes” name was on it The stone had to be turned 90 degrees, a new “Stokes” engraved, and the old one obliterated with the recessed panel that was copied on the other side.
