Airstream–an American icon—beautiful and historic.

July 6, 2025 by Blogfinger

Airstream. November 6, 2020. Paul Goldfinger photograph. Ocean Grove.  Click once to enlarge.

The first Airstream aluminum travel trailer (caravan)  was built in the 1930’s. It became immensely popular.  It was designed by the same man who built the Spirit of St.Louis for Charles Lindburgh.  Since then it has been admired by anyone who sees one.

The Airstream speaks of privacy, nostalgia, travel, American craftsmanship, artistry and adventure.

Its appearance conjures up images of romance—the curtains are drawn, and anything can happen.  Thus the Cole Porter song below.

THOMAS HAMPSON sings Cole Porter with the London Symphony Orchestra.
