I was about to start my internship in New York. Eileen and I rented a one bedroom apartment in Fort Lee. We bought some furniture but my favorite purchase was a modest “stereo” system with a turntable, 2 speakers and a Fisher receiver. This was the first 33 1/3 album which I bought. I played it over and over.
This “stereo” album by Columbia Records contained 12 songs, everyone perfect. “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” was the featured song, but the selection below touched me the most.: “When Joanna Loved Me.”
The cover portrait was by Richard Avedon, a 40 year old fashion and portrait photographer. We posted a piece about Avedon on May 8 on Blogfinger.net
Tony was fond of this song, and so was Frank Sinatra who recorded it as well.
When Tony would sing “When Joanna Loved Me” in concerts he introduced it by saying, “I love this song so much that I named my first daughter after it.”
“When Joanna Loved Me.” Tony Bennett.
