Katy Roessle won a 2022 prize on Blogfinger , and you all can see what a joy and privilege it is when someone wins a signed Jack Bredin print. This is “Flag Day” which is one of Jack’s most powerful and beautiful works. It is a scene near the George Washington Bridge.

I have a memory of this song. It was graduation day for the class ahead of us. The Rutherford High Dance Band assembled in the pit of the old Rivoli Theater downtown which had later become the William Carlos Williams Theater.
The big room had hushed for the graduates in their gowns to march down the aisles. We were going to perform Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” and I was to play the beautiful alto sax solo. I had a microphone, and the sound of my horn just floated overhead and all around. It gave me goose bumps; I don’t know about anyone else.
After the event, as we were packing up our instruments, a gentleman approached me and said, “You sound like Jimmy Lunceford.” Lunceford was a black alto sax jazz star from Mississipi. I was walking on air for awhile.
