I made a series of black and white photographs from the telecast. Years later I made darkroom prints from my negatives. Paul Goldfinger photograph ©
The astronauts who landed that day in the lunar module “Eagle” were Commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin. There were also photographers obtaining live TV images (from which my photo was obtained) and they had two Hasselblad (from Sweden) cameras for stills. I believe that all their images were black and white. My camera was a Pentax Spotmatic using Kodak black and white film.
Interestingly, the black and white TV transmission video tapes were lost and were not recovered for over 30 years. I don’t know if any stills like mine, from the live TV images, were published in 1969 or ever. The stills that were published in newspapers, magazines and books were provided by NASA to the public from the still negatives obtained by the crew.
We watched the event in our living room in New York City. It took years before I was able to make silver gelatin prints in my darkroom from the negatives.
