“Allentown is a community that values historic preservation and open space with small town values.”

The above quote is the first sentence as this Monmouth County town describes itself on its web site.

In OG we don’t have an expression of values. Our Master Plan regarding our history is ignored.

Allentown was founded in the 18th century, and there was a grist mill here.  This one, “The Old Mill,” dates back to 1855.  It is still in use.  Inside are quaint shops oriented towards the arts and a coffee shop.

Allentown has a population of 1,828  (2010. )  The downtown is quaint, and the mill and nearly 250 houses are on the state and national historic registers. On the main street there is a small restaurant called “Woody’s Towne Café.”  Next door is a fine ice cream parlor.   There also is a revolutionary war cemetery.

This town lives up to its promise of small town America.  I checked their community calendar and found no tourist activities other than a public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4.  They are serious about maintaining “open space” land use principles. But that requires attention, and there is no sign of any disagreement regarding those community values.

You can visit Allentown by getting on 195 via Belmar and heading west.  Go to Woody’s and order a BLT.  Then visit the shops and maybe have an ice cream.

Looking for take-out. They are having fried chicken on Fridays for Lent. Blogfinger photo.

They don’t have a parking problem, but they do have a concern about trucks roaring through town.
