Do you have galvanized pipes? The water company shut down one block today to deal with one house.

Pipe work on Mt. Hermon Way. 4/29/25. Blogfinger photo. The work is being done by an outside contractor hired by the water company.

By Paul Goldfinger.  This is my block.

One block on Mt. Hermon was shut down today to allow a crew of workers to dig up a street.  It seems that old houses may be victimized by corrosion of galvanized water pipes, so this resident who lives in an old OG house evidently called the water company for an inspection.   It could have been a bad water taste or color, or the concern may be that toxins such as lead could be a preventive health hazard. We don’t know for sure.

Pipe corrosion can be in the street, in connections, or inside the house where water can be tested in the basement.

If replacement is needed, copper pipes with special lining is used.  The State or the water company  evidently would pay for such work.

If there is a health hazard among old homes in the Grove, why doesn’t the Township check all the houses in town?

Or any homeowner can call the water company and request an inspection.  It should  include water testing and pipe testing.

While water dept. might be responsible for public street replacement I do not think they are responsible for inside a house. Lots of unrenovated homes in OG still have galvanized piping. At this point in time most are rusted inside impeding water flow. Such piping should be replaced with copper or pex.
