The Indian traditions among African Americans in New Orleans involves over 30 “tribes.” They parade in the black neighborhoods during Mardi Gras and they have their own costumes, language, music and other traditions. In the HBO series TREME there is a great deal of time spent regarding these “Indians,” especially one “Big Chief” in particular.
The song below belongs to that tradition, and the late Dr.John recorded a great deal of of Mardi Gras music.
