7/27/2024: Deb Osepchuk and Jen Shaffer from HPC were a tag team in keeping everyone awake for a talk on OG history and HPC small print.

It’s hard to imagine why we needed a meeting about OG history. Anyone who cares about OG history already knows most of what Jen had to say. We have a good timeline on Blogfinger. And the Groaners never show any interest in history.

However Jen is an engaging speaker and she did offer a few obscure facts and she managed to finish her presentation with no “uh’s”
The audio-visual experts at the HOA again screwed up the presentation by not allowing we-the-Zoomers to see Jen’s pointer.
Jen showed a quote by Stokes that his planning was off the mark as he never envisioned how busy the Grove would become and how the tiny lot sizes would create challenges forever.

Here are a few more fascinating Jen-bits:
a. Stokes started out as a Quaker.
b. The first map was 1870. Stokes saw OG as a “Christian seaside resort”—Sound familiar? Ask Michael Badger.
c. The historic designations (NJ and US) were achieved in the 1970’s by a combined town effort: CMA, Neptune, secular OG townspeople, and leaders such as historian (HSOG) Ted Bell.
Was this the last time that all factions got together? It should happen again before OG turns into a permanent mish-mash.
And instead of another HOA session on “Don’t know much about history;” How about addressing the current property tax crisis? And how about a Boston Tea Party part II here. How about an HOA sponsored demonstration in front of the Mother Ship? The Groaners need a dose of activism and testosterone.

DION: Why are there no teen-agers at these meetings? Because the HOA knows nothing about the latest demographics in town.
Blogfinger had 335 “visits” that day; a lot more than attended the HOA meeting. They could do better if they tackled some really important topics such as excessive tourism each summer.
It’s true that all shore towns are busy in season, but they don’t have the flood generated by the street closers of the Chamber of Commercials in our small town America.
And, of course, there is the CMA which, in lockstep with Neptune Township, refuses to favor parking permits for residents while sponsoring hundreds of special events each summer.
No other shore town has these two factors.
They don’t even know that We-the-(secular) People and the largest group in town exist.
But the truth is that most OG citizens don’t seem to care, so nothing will change.
