The riots in Baltimore in recent days reminds us that once an event like that occurs with firebombing, National Guard, injuries, anger, and property damage, a community may be set back ten years or more.

Consider Asbury Park where they had “race riots” that began on July 4, 1970. The west side of town was seriously damaged, and the tourist industry was set back as well.

This summer will be the 45th anniversary of those AP riots, and the town is just now coming back.

Geraldo Rivera said that the AP riots were his first assignment and he described the town as a very peaceful and prosperous place even though it was racially and economically diverse back then.
