A little side note … in the olden days of my musty youth, the question was, “How do you spot the Baptist Church in town?”
Answer, “Look for the rooster on the steeple.” Baptist churches used to be completely unadorned, free of symbols and icons, except for a crowing rooster representing the ‘cock crowing thrice’ sometimes atop a standard weather vane.
I remember the controversy in my family church when some decided that they would install a plain brass cross behind the pulpit. The cross did go up, but several members actually left the congregation afterwards in protest. This wasn’t the deep south by the way, it was NJ!
