« FEMA’s “Waffle House Index” for disaster assessment.
Why is “Art on the Porch” important? Is it the art, or something else? And what about the changes just announced for 2025? See below. »

This portrait was taken at Waffle House #314 in Weldon, North Carolina. Eileen ordered her eggs well done, and the waitress called out to the chef, “Eggs whale.”

As she was making change, I made this photo.  I said,  “..took your picture.”

She said,  “Thank you.”

The Waffle House is our favorite restaurant when traveling on Route 95 through the south. See our prior post (link below) regarding the Waffle House  chain.   —PG

BILL FRISELL:  “One of These Days” from the Nashville album. The vocalist is Robin Holcomb (b. 1954 Georgia)

Reblogged this on Blogfinger and commented:

There is feeling of being in an oasis at 6:00 am, still dark out, in a Waffle House in America’s southland. Thus the Bach piece “Sheep May Safely Graze” by the Lumiere String Quartet.

We stayed near a Waffle House during a recent visit to Disney, passed it many times during the week (and a few others too) so eventually went in and tried the fare – not bad. We ordered grits and scrapple to try to get the full experience.
Anyway, not long after I read that the Waffle Houses have a great reputation for staying open during bad storms with generators and emergency procedures. So much so that FEMA apparently has an informal Waffle House Index that they use to talk about storms – green is full menu, yellow is limited menu and red is closed. According to one FEMA official, “if you get to a storm area and the Waffle House is closed – that’s really bad.”
